It's going to be interesting to see where the rest of the media goes over the next day or two. Even though they didn't go as far as the LA Times with their labeling, they'd definitely pushed the "LSU Women are the villains of the sport" narrative and played up the "LSU vs the world" (because in the media's minds, LSU, like their coach, is just so unlikeable) mentality. They even mentioned the "LSU vs everyone" a couple of times in studio during the game yesterday. But now that the LA Times went way too far, people are scrambling to distance themselves from what is so blatantly sexist and defamatory of young women athletes. Will they back completely off or will they cling to their desire to cast LSU in the role of the trash-talking thugs (while ignoring the trash talk and unsportsmanlike behavior of the stars of other teams)?

Where has this team done anything other than play games and respond to attacks?

What? It’s THEIR fault that years ago Kim said things that insinuated an angle liberals didn’t like? Behind closed doors no less.

It’s too bad Louisiana doesn’t have any media outlets that are worth a shite. Should fire off a scathing piece on the hypocrisy of the national media and the treatment of LSU’s black women in todays world

Yeah, it's sort of surprising he left that part in there as well--CKM addressed this at the presser as well. She said something like, "You want to talk about growing women's basketball? Have you been to a game in Baton Rouge or seen us play an SEC team on the road? Come look at our crowds." That's a paraphrase, but that's basically what she said. And she's right. She and the LSU women have done as much to "grow women's basketball" as anyone in the recent memory.

Fact: Larry Bird may have been the biggest trash talker ever during his playing days, in college & pro. Does he receive the same hatred as Angel because of it?

Not just Bird.

When Nebraska hit the trey against Iowa to take the lead, Jaz Shelley looked across the court and taunted Caitlin with the "you can't see me" gesture. Jaz didn't get criticized. Jaz is white.

I'm seeing a pattern here.

He changed the dirty debutante/milk & cookies wording to:

Do you prefer the team that wants to grow women’s basketball or the one seemingly hellbent on dividing it?

Seems like the defending national champions have done a pretty good job growing the game- the author must’ve missed these headlines:
“ Sunday’s NCAA women’s title game draws record TV audience”
“ Nearly ten million viewers for NCAA women’s title game”
“ N.C.A.A. Women’s Tournament Shatters Ratings Record in Final”

Many of you might not remember this, but in 2007 Don Imus on his radio broadcast said that the Rutgers women's basketball team looked like a bunch of "nappy headed hos". He was roundly criticized and lost his top rated radio program, "IMUS IN THE MORNING" because of that comment.

Ben Bolch's comments are more egregious and misogynistic. I hope the LA Times takes action against him, but I doubt that they have the balls to do it.

It’s tone-deaf and it’s right on-par with so many in that part of the country who live in a bubble, blind to reality.

UCLA sports is irrelevant. Their head football coach willingly left to take an assistant coaching job. They cover half of the Rose Bowl with a tarp because they can’t draw more than 50K fans. It’s only going to get worse for the other sports when they start playing Big10 schools. He was attempting to drum up support where there is none, and he failed miserably.

Referring to a team of predominantly black young women as villains and dirty debutantes sounds a bit racist to me.

It’s not racist when he is comparing them to a team who is also predominantly comprised of young, black women.

If he were comparing them to Iowa, then a charge of racism could be justified. But not in this case.

Just because something is bad, doesn’t mean it’s racism.

It’s really a shallow article imo. Two good teams played and it could have gone either way. Our girls pulled it out in the end: awesome job. They did great. I love our team.

So the lib's heartburn with CKM is that she told her clearly gay players at Baylor that life might be easier for them if they kept in on the DL???

This is what the Baylor Sexual Conduct Policy said as of 2015:

Sexual Conduct
BU-PP 031

Policy:

Baylor will be guided by the biblical understanding that human sexuality is a gift from God and
that physical sexual intimacy is to be expressed in the context of marital fidelity. Thus, it is
expected that Baylor students, faculty and staff will engage in behaviors consistent with this
understanding of human sexuality.

So by caring for them as human beings, realizing that their sexual orientation is really none of her business but giving them what could have been the best honest advice anyone had given them up to that point of their life she's getting vilified???

Be flamboyantly lesbian at Baylor, get kicked out, miss out on the chance to showcase your talent and lose the opportunity for a comparitively lucrative pro career. Oh well, at least CKM kept her mouth shut and didn't say mean things about your fashion choices or body art.

Dirty Debutantes is the name of a porn movie. The reporter may not have known that before writing the article but I’m sure that they are embarrassed now.

No one in the media seems to understand this, or if they do they’re just ignoring it. The hostility should be directed at Baylor and not the employee of Baylor.

Yup. LA Times put the vast majority on “LSU’s side” here. Just read the twitter comments… it’s pretty unanimously being criticized.

It was kinda split before the LA times piece

Regardless, Kim Mulkey has a unique ability to put her program in the national spotlight and I think it’s great for LSU and women’s basketball, because most people - probably myself included - wouldn’t really care. She has a passion for her profession and commands attention and respect.

In a couple weeks no one will care about all this. Because none of it really matters in the grand scheme, there’s no “scandal” here or really anything that’s incredibly newsworthy.. But for now, LSU women’s basketball and Kim Mulkey are the center of attention, and I love it.
