The reason the band can't go to Seattle is because it's in Seattle. If we were playing Texas A&M or another regional team, things might be different.

I for one would rather us play nothing but regional teams and leave the Pac-10 shite for bowl games.

BOOOOOOooooo! What a crappy decision to leave our band out of the games. That band is the 12th man on that field, and we all know it. I will volunteer to contribute if someone will set up a web site and assure honesty in accepting donations. Chicken, will you do this?

We're working with the athletic department and WAFB to set up donations for this. We will know more later today and I will keep everyone posted.

Hey Golfer, what is your email?

Assuming we get the go-ahead from the athletic department to start raising funds today, we want a representative from WAFB and the Athletic Department as well as one other person to have access to the PayPal account that will be accepting donations (you don't have to actually do anything, but at least you would have access to monitor the donation account).

That way everyone can rest assured that ever dollar donated is going to help send a pep band to Seattle and the full band to one SEC away game.

JPLSU1981.. thank you for stirring the pot and emailing Mr. Vincent. I think you will enjoy my email to Mr. Vincent... I know 289 people who will be happy to contribute towards the collection for the band, which I will be happy to pass along to them once WAFB and whoever works out the website. Our website at LINK raised over $20k for our group ticket purchase and PayPal is amazing for getting people to make contributions. Remember the dude who took up a collection for billboards hating on U$C's faux dynasty? We can do this and we WILL get the band to Seattle!

Mr. Vincent,

My name is Paul Hoffman and I'm President of the LSU Alumni chapter in Portland, Oregon, the Rose City Tigers.

Yesterday, we purchased 289 tickets (that's $20,400) from the University of Washington's Group Ticket Sales office on behalf of Northwest LSU Alumni. This is a once in a lifetime chance to see LSU play in our neck of the woods, as LSU has NEVER played a game in Oregon or Washington state.

60 of the tickets we purchased (including my own personal tickets) were requested to be near the LSU band by people who were wiling to take an obstructed view of the field if it meant they could be near our band. They traded a much better view from the upper deck in order to hear the band play loud and clear. It never occurred to us that the band would not make the trip and I'm sure many of them will be quite upset when they hear the news.

We raised $20,000 via PayPal to buy tickets as a group and I would be happy to assist in setting up a similar collection towards getting the band up here for the game. I realize the budget had to be cut, but I agree with the forwarded email below that the band has far greater meaning to LSU fans (especially alumni) than any new fangled scoreboards or whatever fancy new equipment LSU wants to buy. Surely there are other cuts that should be made before touching the band's budget.

The band is truly the very last thing that LSU should cut. During the dark, dark days of Curley Hallman's tenure (which I endured as an undergrad student), the band was all that kept us going. The band starts and finishes every LSU game, as they did my freshman year when we were a dismal 2-9. I get chills from hearing them play each and every song, especially the alma mater. No scoreboard could ever come close to the value the band delivers each and every game.

Please reconsider this decision and allow the alumni and fans to set up a collection for the band. If not the regular travel band, then perhaps band alumni or a pep band? Anything would be better than no band at all. The silence would be deafening.

You can not place a value on how much the band means to LSU fans and alumni, not to mention what it means to current students and the athletes. Only students and alumni know what it means to truly come to know and love LSU, and it could never be the same without the band playing at each and every football game, home and away.

Paul Hoffman

What is the goal? Clearly you need LSU's participation to some extent. Is the LSU Athletic Dept. willing to fund, say, half the cost if you can raise the other half? What is your contingency in the event that insufficient funds are raised? Who is going to step up and identify himself as a credible person responsible for assuring that the funds are accounted for and properly applied? Is it WAFB?

Not trying to be a downer, just pointing out a couple of the things (no doubt already thought of by yourself) that anyone will want to know before sending you his/her money.

The band is now going: From Herb

After making cost reductions to three of the band’s four trips to conference road games during the 2009 football season, LSU Athletics has decided to send a pep band to the game at the University of Washington.

The fact remains that the LSU Athletic Department has been asked to contribute more financially to the University this year than ever before in the wake of state budget cuts to higher education. With an increase in administrative fees levied on University auxiliaries rising from 3 percent to 5 percent, and an increase in student fees the athletic department must pay for its 450 student-athletes, LSU Athletics will be passing an additional $2.5 million to the University in the coming academic year. The athletic department must cut costs in various areas, and expenditures for band trips is one area that will be impacted.

LSU Athletics places a high value on the Tiger Band which is evidenced by the fact that the LSU Athletic Department funds the band at a higher rate than any other school in the Southeastern Conference. In addition, the Athletic Department has committed $4.5 million to the construction of a new band hall, making it the single largest contributor to that project.

LSU will be sending pep bands to each of the four road conference games in 2009. The band will bus to and from each location on the day of the game for three of those games with no hotel stay in order to facilitate the cost necessary to send a pep band to Washington. There will be no full band trip to any road game except a post-season bowl game. These measures will result in cost savings of $125,000 to $150,000 for the athletics program during the 2009-2010 fiscal year.

Let me guess: J.U.M.A.S. They should have been kicked out of the university as well for endangering lives while driving drunk........

The pep band will be great! Huey Long can stop spinning in his grave now. :)

Mr. Vincent, thank you for the very prompt response and behalf of all the Pacific Northwest alumni, allow me to extend our gratitude.

As you will see on our website at LINK , we are looking forward to the "Battle in Seattle" and we really do consider this a once in a lifetime experience for all the fans and alumni in this part of the country.

I only have one more favor to ask... promise me the game won't be close and beat them by multiple touchdowns. We don't want a lifetime of heckling by Husky fans. That game in 2004 against the OSU Beavers was way, way too close for my taste. We can't count on voodoo hexes on the kicker to beat the Huskies!

Pdx, thank you so much for sending that to Herb. Very well written.
We have a large contingency from the Los Angeles area making the trip and I hope to meet you.

Thanks JP for spearheading this. Getting the band there is very important to us alums, especially the ones that live on the west coast and have been looking forward to seeing the Tigers and everything associated with LSU out here.

Mr Vincent,

This is great news! I think this is a great decision and the vast majority of Tiger fans making this trip will certainly be thrilled to know that we will have representatives of the greatest band in college football at this game. This will truly be a special and unique road trip for LSU football, and it just wouldn't be the same without the band. As you know, the GoldenBand is just as much a part of the tradition and history of LSU football as Tiger Stadium itself.

It also feels good to know that the fan's voices were heard by the athletic department, specifically you. I'm sure we the fans can certainly bug all of you at times, but it does feel good to know that you're always open to input from the fans.

Thanks again for following up on this! Again, I appreciate all of the hard work that you all do for this University. We as fans may not always agree with your decisions, but at the end of the day we're all on the same side ... LSU's!

See you in Seattle! Geaux Tigers!
Jeff

Herb sent me another email and he copied in Coach Miles.. below is what he sent and my response.

Hope this motivates the troops to put a whoopin on the Huskies like we did 26 years ago when I was a little boy with my dad in Tiger Stadium watching the Tigers absolutely destroy a top 10 ranked Huskies team. Until the day I watched the Beavs beat LSU on all but the scoreboard, I had ZERO respect for the Pac 10. I'd like LSU to mop the floor with the Huskies one more time and put the Pac 10 back in its place.

I'm just really glad we're not playing the Beavs again...that 2004 game still seems like a bad dream. The Beavs are the most dangerous team in the Pac 10 and the Rogers boys are the real deal.

Thanks Herb! I know y'all must have taken a lot of heat over this so you deserve praise for finding a quick solution.

And Les.. no whisker thin, kicker voodoo, overtime, give-me-cardiac-arrest win like Saban delivered against the Beavers. The Huskies didn't win a single, solitary game last year and we can NOT let them beat us or even think they have a chance!

Thanks, Paul. We’ll get the band there. Your “multiple touchdown” victory request I will turn over to Coach Miles.

We are looking forward to seeing LSU’s great fans in the Northwest in September.
