I hate to tell y'all this but Simmons is s real good player. I just don't see where he is one of the best ever at lsu in 17 games. Imo there is no way he is top 5 in lsu history. Say what you want but if he is as good as y'all think, lsu would have a better record than they do.

He is averaging 20 pts, 13 boards and 5 assists a game. That is unheard of. He easily is one of the best players to come through this university ever. Doesnt have to stay for 3-4 years to be considered an all-time great here.

LSU went 20-12, 11-7 in the SEC in the 1988-89 season with a 1st round exist as a 10th seed to a 7th seeded UTEP team. That freshman that year was pretty good...or, was he?

Sometimes an individual player can only do so much...

ETA: Had CJ only been here for one year, anyone that would have not pegged him as a Top 5 guy because the team was only 20-12 with a one and done in the Tourney would be crazy.

The second team would be an interesting thought:

Take your pick for the next five from the following:

Marcus Thornton
Brandon Bass
Ricky Blanton
Howard Carter
Maurice Carter
Baby
Joe Dean
Rudy Macklin
Ethan Martin
Don Redden
Al Sanders III
Stro
CT II
Sparky Wade
Anthony Randolph
Darrel Mitchell
Tasmin
Al Green
Bobby Lowther
JOB III
Kenny Higgs
Clarence Ceasar
Fig Newton
Stanley Roberts

A much tougher exercise.

I say no. He hasn't done anything out of this world yet. If he leads them deep into the tourney, then maybe.

Does not equal 20ppg, 13rpg, 5apg, 1.8stl...oh yea, all of those are top 5 in the conference and his rebounding leads the league...BY 3 REBOUNDS PER GAME.

He boosted attendance, which for LSU basketball, is pretty out of this world.

You must be looking at his per 40 numbers. Geert actually averaged 15.7 and 10.5.

Would love to see Redden and HI-C Carter draining threes in today's game...

But that's lots to choose from depending upon what you want to do.

His numbers don't really warrant it. Look at his numbers and a guy like Storm Warren's 2009-10 campaign. Other than a couple of boards and the physical tools difference, Tyrus' one season was replicated by a guy that people barely remember playing for LSU. Tyrus was a great player for us, and filled a huge, important role, but his numbers don't really hold up in the historical context.

Yeah, it is tough. There is a lot of equivalent talent there. A guy like Anthony Randolph would be a huge sleeper for something like that. 14th overall pick. Lots of talent, was a part of a lost season, though.

A lot of these lineups look nice, but the same question i have from all of them is...

Where is the defense???

Pistol and Jackson would allow for dribble penetration versus any all time guards from other schools.

No.

Simmons is a 6'10/6'11 point guard with no offensive game, other than his height. He's a pass-first player. That in itself isn't a bad thing, as Magic dominated as a 6'9 pg, but Magic had a world of offensive moves down low when he needed them.

As for all the "basketball IQ" talk, yes, he can see the court and pass. How high is that IQ to make passes to some of the players he's made, when the score is tight and the game is on the line? I don't CARE if such-and-such is open for a 3, that guy hasn't been making them, and you NEED to score.

It gets a little pathetic to hear some fans twisting themselves into knots, trying to explain how great someone is, and if you can't see it you "just don't know basketball".

This reminds me of the "all Shaq can do is dunk" line of thinking. The problem with that reasoning was, that was all he needed to do and no one could stop him from doing it. Dunking is great, and when you can get that shot all the time, that's amazing.

Simmons has basically fouled out three entire front courts in conference play. Not bad for a 6'10" point forward who can't score, yet somehow scores 20 a game.
