You must be looking at his per 40 numbers. Geert actually averaged 15.7 and 10.5.

I think that Hamminck averaged 20 and 10 for a good portion of that last year, or at least I remembered that. I was a kid.

Ricky Blanton averaged 20 and 8 his last year, I believe.

I am not trying to take anything away from Simmons. He might end up being the greatest player to ever come through LSU and his stats this year are incredible. I am just trying to figure out if his possible "Top 5" status is based on how he is playing now, what he produces at LSU, or just how good he is and will one day be in the NBA.

I would tend to side with what one produces while at LSU both in personal and leading in team accomplishments.

If you do that, you have to move Glen Davis into the conversation since he was the team leader who led LSU to the Final Four. And, of course Maravich, Jackson, Shaq, and Petit as well as Macklin.

It is good to have more than 5 to argue about now, though.

As a rookie in the NBA, Lebron shot 41%, attempted 19 shots per game, scored 20, 5.5 rebounds, 5.9 assists. He also averaged 39 minutes per game. In year 2 it went up, but he averaged 42 minutes per game. People don't remember Lebron's actual numbers AT ALL.

Simmons can't shoot so he's behind Lebron there. But rebounding and ability to get to the goal Simmons is better at the same age.

How many teams got in back then? 16, 32? It's 68 teams now. Pretty sure LSU would have made the cut with a field that large.

Between 22-25.

Pistol's teams went 14-12 (8-10) So., 13-13 (7-11) Jr., 22-10 (13-5) Sr. Pistol was brilliant, but not even he could will his team to the NCAA tournament. He did make an NIT final four as a senior, though. Very interesting career he had.

My God, are you dumb enough to compare NBA playoffs of a lottery team to a team in college making the top 64?

I would like to know how he can be an ALL TIME LSU great and not make the post season tourney.

Sometimes I wonder what schools stupid people went to, so I can write them and tell them that they need to teach people better reasoning and analogy skills.

So the basketball team's leader in minutes, points, assists, rebounds, blocks, fg% (minimum 90 attempts, third with no requirement behind Shortess and Epps), Free Throw Attempts, and Steals, who is 20% of the lineup is not more important than one of 22 starters on a football team (mind you an elite guy, but still a basketball player is on the floor for offense and defense)? I must have wandered into crazy land.

Only LSU fans would hate on Simmon

god, I hate the term "hate." Nobody hates Simmons - he's an incredible talent.

But when the hype machine has him going no. 1 in the NBA draft, all aspects of Ben's play are fair game.

It's not "hating" to point out his weaknesses or to say he's not the next LeBron.

I have no problem with your answer. However I need to see what he does the rest of the season to even think about putting him too 5. Again stats don't mean everything. Do you feel that jj is holding him back????? Not sure how old you are, but Jordan at unc was good, but played in a system and was pretty good. Once he got into the nba he was able to play his game and look what happened.

11-6.....thats what I need to know. He's leading the team no doubt but has been very inconsistent at times and has been part of some terrible losses. 17 games is not enough to crown him "top 5 forever." He could solidify his position by playing 110% effort every game and carrying this team to the post season. It may happen but we're on a short leash now.

Hate may not be the right word, but there is definitely a large portion of our fanbase that roots against Ben Simmons, Johnny Jones and the basketball program as a whole.

I have a friend who is from another part of the state of Louisiana who went to another in-state college that recently got a job in Baton Rouge. He said that he is absolutely appalled at how many of the guys that he works with that are happy the every time the day after LSU Basketball loses. And these guys are supposedly LSU "fans." My friend is completely impartial and that was his opinion and I agree with him because I see it on this board every day about the basketball program.

Why would anybody calling themselves an LSU fan be rooting against the team? Something doesn't sound right with this story.

LOL based on what

Having seen him play. league execs saying he is the best since lebron. Him being pretty much expected to be the number 1 pick in the draft. Him damn near leading the country in rebounds as a point forward. Him damn near leading the sec in assists at 6 10'. Him averaging 20 points a game while shooting almost 60% as a freshman. Him being 3rd in the sec in steals as a 6 10' forward, the only non guard in the top 10. He is one of the most talented basketball players i have ever seen in college.

So as a non-basketball aficionado, am I to believe that when he gets coaching in the NBA he will suddenly have an outside (or any) jump shot? Is that the way this works...suspect??

No. Its called basketball being his job. No school in the way. Just shooting basketballs day in and day out probably 2 or 3 times moreso than he does now. He will get better there.

I just don't see where he is one of the best ever at lsu in 17 games. Imo there is no way he is top 5 in lsu history.
