This. Kid could turn out good. Fact is, we need a QB in this class and it looks like we will be lucky to get him, considering our other options.

Didnt someone start a thread on this a couple weeks ago? I think most people were scared because his initials are JJ and he is a black QB

Not surprising for this board.

Am I the only person on here who thinks Johnson wouldn't be a bad prospect to take? The guy has above average physical ability and a really high ceiling. He would have probably 2 years (at least) to learn the fundamentals from the coaching staff before he would ever be asked to step on the field and produce. Solid prospect in my opinion (although I would take Riley Ferguson first), not sure why everyone is blowing up over this kid getting an offer.

{not sure why everyone is blowing up over this kid getting an offer.}

Because we've seen strong armed athletes with high upsides (Jefferson, Russell) who couldn't read a defense as a freshman or a senior.

Precisely. I have no problem with his offer because he has a ton of talent but I don't want him unless it's in a 2 man class and I primarily don't agree with him being the preferred option on the board. At this point it would be understandable but not at the time in which that info came out. When the info initially came out Barrett,Thomas, Bateman and Mitch were still on the board. Now all are off so I can agree with him being towrds/at the top. I still prefer Ferguson and Kincaide to him. Just my opinion and evidently others agree but I can definitely see why some people like him. He's a talented kid. Just seems no less a project than what we have and I'm sick of projects.

Kid shows some flashes.

My biggest worry with him is that he stares down his primary receiver 95% of the time and he also has an odd release.

Both of those things can be fixed with proper coaching however.

And to be honest the majority of HS QB's do stare down the primary receiver because most of the time it doesn't even hurt you until the late rounds of the playoffs.

I don't think Russell had a huge problem reading defenses. He spread the ball around as well as any QB we've had in a while. He may not have even realized he was reading the defense, but he often found the open man anyway.

Jarrett Lee struggled to read defenses as much as any QB I can remember, even as a 5th year senior. Yet everybody wanted Connor Mitch, who IMO is basically a Lee clone: never under center in high school, threw mainly to one receiver, etc.

Where did the info come from that Johnson was ahead of all those guys anyway? Best I can tell, it was just something thrown out on the internet based on an offhand comment from Johnson's coach or something, then everyone just ran with it.

Yeah, Miles record of developing projects is not comforting.

No way. Rivers was never even considered by Bama or Auburn. Bama has looked at Johnson and AU is very interested. Johnson is better than Rivers was at this stage, and has a much higher ceiling. He really isn't as bad as you guys are saying he is. I wouldn't mind if Auburn took him, especially if we take 2 QBs

He only gets Auburn offer if they miss on other guys and have an empty slot. I'm hoping this happens because he will take an Auburn offer.

Bama looked at him for a minute before passing.

No other SEC school gave him a long look other than Ole Miss.

Not TT, but I think if AU gave him a firm offer, he'd commit immediately. I think he's just keeping his options open just in case we get Rettig or Buchanan and decide not to take 2 QBs

I have no problem with Johnson I have faith in Krag's and know he can produce. Ever since the O staff was able to get Kiel interested I don't doubt what they can do.

Comparing Johnson to Jefferson is kinda like looking at Tennessee's quarterbacks in the 90s.

They thought that Heath Shuler was the one. Then Peyton Manning (which he was), but Tee Martin was the man that led them to a national championship.

Don't get caught up in guys that seem similar. Just let the coaches decide.

ETA: I will also say that I am a bit worried that we are not landing OT's and QB's in this class so far, but just let February happen. Things will be fine.

Are you telling me JaMarcus Russell didn't pan out at LSU? The guy was the #1 overall pick in the NFL draft, won a BCS bowl game, ranks second all time at LSU in career completion percentages and touchdown passes but still was a "project" player who you wouldn't take? Ridiculous.

You're seriously going to talk about Russell in the same breath as Jefferson?

There is no doubt he still had room for improvement as a junior but my God some people have some incredibly skewed and wrong opinions on Russell.
