The problem is that we will not take a full 25 person class this year and with the numbers expected to be around 20

Why? LSU will be losing about 16 or 17 seniors next year. Last year they signed 24 (including Rockey and Johns) while losing only 13 guys. The normal attrition of non-seniors in a top program is 6 or 7 guys (early entry, transfers, medical hardship, disciplinary reasons), so LSU should be able to sign between 23 and 25 players, if they want to.

The numbers I have heard quotes on both sites say we wont sign 25. 20-22 seems to be the general consensus at this point. Just passing along what I have heard. I haven't sat down to look at attrition, graduation, etc. personally.

They'll lay all of this out in front of Cobbs and/or Reed so that it is clear what the plan is.

Agreed. They will be able to explain their plan and make the position look as open as possible. For Reed, he is playing the slot, so guys like Hunter and Simon would not be his competition. I think he could come in and start in the slot (pass up C. Tolliver).

Cobbs is dynamic and will get on the field. Especially losing a guy like Trindon who is a specialty guy, Cobbs could be used in a similar fashion from day one.

Alright, I just checked out the roster ( LINK), and assuming Jared Mitchell goes pro in baseball and Ace Foyil has a scholarship, we will lose 18 scholarship seniors. That should be more than enough for a full class.

Here is the 2010 WR Depth Chart. I also think that signing more than 4 receivers in a single class is a bit too much, but with decommittments, qualifying issues, etc., I can see why the staff would consider 5 or 6 guys for 4 slots.

Seniors
Terrance Toliver

Juniors
John Williams (potential transfer to GT apparently)
DeAngelo Peterson (unless he is a full-time TE)

Sophomores
Rueben Randle
Tim Molton
Chris Tolliver
Jhryn Taylor (unless he changes positions as well)

We are pretty thin at WR after this year, especially if anyone transfers.

At least we are replacing them with the elite the country has to offer.

Ace Foyil is not on scholarship--at least he wasn't in the past.

Where is the John Williams to GT rumor from?

Keys...

Good point.

WR position following 2008 season:

- Ricky Dixon transfer
- Tried to bring in 3 WR in 2009 class. Only got one.
.....R. Randle only 2009 commit
.....D. Benton to Auburn
.....K. Bell decommitment
- Five WRs Loss after 2009
- D. Peterson to TE
- J. Williams possible transfer

You throw in a few unfortunate casualties to injury, grades, or disciplinary issues and we could have a WR dilema in 2010 like we had at QB in 2009. I don't think that Les will let that happen.

IMO, I don't think that Simon is a lock to play WR. If they could try D. Peterson at TE, they can try Simon at TE and/or the defensive side of the ball. Hence, the ATH tag.

John Williams rumor per TigerGumbo...

quote:

Wide receiver John Williams (5-10, 180), who began his LSU career at cornerback and has had a difficult time cracking the playing rotation at his new position despite earning kudos from coaches and players for his work on LSU's scout team simulating Georgia Tech quarterback Josh Nesbitt prior to the Chick-Fil-A Bowl in December, is rumored as another possible Georgia Tech transfer. Williams is still listed as a member of the Tiger football roster at present, however.

Only getting one WR this past yer really put LSU in somewhat of a predicament. More so than I really realized until it has all been laid out like this. Well done men.

Hence, taking a JUCO guy is a GREAT idea in my opinion. Especially a top notch guy like Lee that can step right in a play from day 1 (especially if he gets here in the spring).

I am not sold on what side of the ball Simon will play on. I think Peterson will stick at TE and they will try to make him into the next Ingram (TE at UF)

Absolutely. Toliver will be the only upperclassman. Randle, Molton, and Tolliver will be the only other "locks" at wideout. Peterson and Taylor are trying out new positions and Williams may transfer. A class with Lee, Hunter, Reed, and Davis would do a lot to shore up the depth at receiver. They are all legit players.

Even if Foyil is not on scholarship, there will be 17 seniors on next year's team. If the staff can convert 13 seniors to 24 scholarships, then this should be child's play. The only reason why I the staff may not sign a full class is because of the thin junior class (only 11 scholarship players, including the two jucos), combined with a very strong 2011 high school group.

Question:

Is there a "K. Bell - commit/decommit" WR recruit in this year's class?

I'm sure the coaches would try to prevent and/or be prepared for something like this.

That's also assuming Terrance doesn't tear it up and go pro.

Most people are nervous about Mike Davis b/c he has said he will still take visits and his Mom thinks he committed too soon.

Unless we get Cobbs or Reed, that may do it for WR in this class.

Lynx,

Do you think we would take a commitment from Kenbrell Thompkins now?

Thompkins is a major UF lean.

Martavious Lee is still not a commitment
