Why is lamb so hard to find in the US?

You can't get it at any supermarket, generally, or even most small stores. I've gotten it from butchers before, but it's mostly impossible to get. It's as common as anything else in the UK. Why is it so hard to find? I've been dying to cook a shepherd's pie for years.
ETA: It's pitiful that I've done medium rare rabbit before I've done a shepherd's pie.

Join Sam's Club. Great prices on a decent selection. Or, find a grower like me and BossFloss did.

Sam's has lamb?! Minced, racks, what?

Racks, legs, etc. best price of any retail outlet.

Are you sure that isn't just your local one?

This is awesome news. I had no idea that Sam's had lamb. I've had access to Sam's for years, but never went because I never really needed anything from there. I still kind of think I'm being trolled.

I saw a shite load of lamb in Sam's today.

I'm not kidding. Call in the morning. Your sams has it.

No troll. Sam's has pretty racks and other cuts, vac sealed. You should look around while you're there for other treasures.

Thanks, guys! Awesome stuff.

Yeah, Sams consistently has lamb

I actually saw some at Walmart on College Dr. yesterday--ground lamb, some chops, and maybe a couple of other types vacuum sealed.
Not sure what the quality is like, but they had some.

Costco had some racks on sale last week... Was crazy cheap. 1/4 of the price per lb as Calandros.
Where do you live? Ive never found lamb to be scarce. Ground lamb for Shep Pie maybe.....but not racks.

Costco has Lamb. Of course, Whole Foods has lamb. I cook leg of lamb quite often on a spit as it is one of my favorite meats to cook outside. The Costco lamb is good and priced right.

Lamb shouldn't be difficult to find, but finding lamb at a discount price can be. Sam's is consistently cheap.

It's not hard to find in NOLA. Dorignacs, Costco, Whole Foods, occasionally at Winn Dixie, Restaurant Depot, Kased Bros halal market in Kenner.....

Rouse's typically has locally raised lamb and goat as well from Royal Family farms out of MS. RD also sells lamb. I find lamb is pretty easy to find.

I have bought lamb from Sams for years. They always have boned legs and racks, and they often have some nice chops.
The price is half or less what they charge for the same in Kroger or Brookshires.
Those racks (cooked indirect on the Weber kettle with a chunk of cherry wood, then seared at the end, served with tzatziki), are a summer weekend favorite.

Sprouts has lamb in general abundance.
I think duck is harder to find (and outrageously expensive).
