Growing up, on Saturday morning, they had Yen Can Cook!, Maryanne Espizido, East Meets West, and a few others.

I watch none of the contest shows, from Chopped on down, they are crap for simpletons. I only watch the shows when they are trying to teach something about food. Speed is the last thing I care about when cooking,

Same here. Iron Chef was the last food 'competition' show I watched.
When they changed the format, and made it America's iron chef, it went to shite.
I can't remember the last time I watched food network. Like the SNL skit says:
"You're watching Food Network, ESPN for figs."

I believe that FN will eventually transition to something far from what was originally intended. Kinda like Mtv did.

Their programming is 90% crap. But I still flip to it and check the guide several times a day...and I'll admit that I enjoy DD&D.

I miss the old days of a drunk Julia Child with her French Chef show, and a drunk Graham Kerr with his Galloping Gourmet show.
These shows in the 1960's were more entertaining and educational than these of 2015.

They have their offshoots in Cooking Channel and DIY for their "how to" shows, and yet even they are now also filled with fluff stuff on the schedules.
Much like YouTube for music videos/songs instead of the MTV and VH1 channels that no longer air them. The straight-up cooking shows and home repair/renovation types, have largely been relegated to YouTube, PBS Create, genre specific tv tiered channel status.
As much as I love DDD or Love It or List It,etc..as a whole I enjoyed FoodTv and HGTV's overall schedules much more so about 15 to 20 years ago.
It seems if you want to want to stay a Top 50 Cable channel, you have to dumb it down, and keep quickly flowing for the masses.
This nails it for me. I don't watch as much FN as I used to either, but it's still a network about food, it's just from a different reality angle that most of us here don't care as much about. But it's great for people who like food but don't want to think about making it themselves, the increasing crowd that is cooking at home less and eating out more.
I'm happier anyway seeking out online specific videos for specific styles of cooking or dishes when I want to see them. My minds is more "how does Emeril (or whoever) do X dish" more than it is "I'm going to tune in to see what Emeril is doing tonight on TV and hope it interests me."
And speaking of seeking out videos, anyone have any favorite modernist cooking shows/people/you tube channels?

I'm a simpleton. I tape Chopped and enjoy watching the tape usually late at night. I'm watching Food Network Star because Jay is on the show this season. Used to watch DDD a bit, but haven't in a long time. I usually catch it when I'm surfing and it happens to be on. I tend to watch cooking shows when I'm doing other things.
I've watched MasterChef a few seasons and stuck with this one because of the LA folks on the show.
I love the old shows on LPB and I enjoyed Besh's last series, though I only saw a few of them. I taped it, but just never got around to watching all of them. I like watching local chefs. Love watching Julia and Pepin.
I can't watch Pioneer woman, though she has 3 recipes I like. Crash hot potatoes, drip roast and one of her baked bean dishes that I use for hot dog/hamburger holidays.
I have the Cooking Channel on from time to time.

And their style of programming isnt going anywhere. See "the next food network star" - all these people have a cheesy schtick (all of which already occupy space on the FN) and cook basic food while giving scripted "presentation"

I used to watch FN a lot in the early days. Got a lot of good ideas particularly for weeknight meals. I still watch Ina on whatever network she's on from time to time. I like her recipes. I tinker with nearly every recipe I use for a dish, but hers work well for the most part. I really like her roasted shrimp prep. I do that often for different dishes. She has some good ideas and nice flavors and she uses a lot of fresh herbs. A novice cook can follow her recipes and put out a good tasting meal without using a bunch of canned soups etc... Easy fresh meal ideas.

I loved old HGTV. There was a show called Decorating Cents that I really liked. And Room by Room.
Travel Channel had really cool shows about destinations and real travel. And I was a huge fan of Great Hotels.
I hate what Food Network and HGTV have become. I'm in the minority when this discussion is usually on here, but I hate Chopped too. I like instructional shows, and I don't mind shows like DDD.

I still watch Chopped & DDD occasionally. Most of the cooking/teaching shows are on in the daytime from around 9:00 am till around 3:00 pm. But there are too many reruns and chefs stepping on each others territory. Ann Burrell has one of the few tolerable shows still on. Giada's breasts are still entertaining to a point. I am upset with Cooking Channel for ditching Nigella and Laura Calder. They were my two favorites. Jeff Mauro & Sunny Anderson are still pretty good on the Kitchen but Zakarian (sp) is pretty insufferable.

I didn't realize Tiffani amber thiessen had a cooking show until a few weeks ago. I walked in the living room and my wife was watching it. She was cooking filets and roasted potatoes. The wife told me I could change it if I wanted to. I told her frick no, kelly kapowski is cooking steak and potatoes. Pretty sure I've had this dream before
