All this bitching and complaining and The Chimes is just sitting there with 2 great locations with the perfect amount of rotating taps raking in the money I'm sure.

No disagreement from me! I'd rather go to either chimes location than pretty much any other bar in the city. I'd probably put the cove ahead of chimes for beer, but beyond that there isn't much. I welcome a new challenger to the craft beer arena, especially downtown where it is much needed.

Agreed, just wish they would take the quality over quantity approach.

And none of these other places have figured it out. The Chimes is a restaurant with great beer. There are lots of people that go there who don't drink a drop of alcohol, but who still spend plenty of money.

Same. There would be a better chance of me checking it out if they did this.

I have a sinking feeling about how the plans will actually be executed.

That said, they did take one of our managers from Bulldog to open the place. And he knows his shite.

Very true

I agree with the original sentiments Jones had in this thread in that I don't really know if I see this being a huge gem in the craft beer nerd scene. I think they will be easily influenced by what needs to be done in order to survive downtown.. which is live music/a DJ bumping booty shaking music, a party atmosphere, etc.

I don't really know the overhead for craft beer vs. "regular" bar items, but if it is significantly more expensive, I could see where only having business on Friday and Saturday could hurt them.

It really could go either way. I don't see a reason to shite on it. But I can admit I doubt I'll go there regularly. Not because of the bar. Because the distance to downtown vs. regular places, cab issues, etc. It would have to be significantly better than what we already have for me to make those sacrifices.

I agree that may likely be its undoing. If that's the case and Delgado loses his money, it's a win win.

This, but downtown is changing. The amount of people living down there that aren't homeless is exploding.

It may not be, but I dont think it needs to be. Just an option for those who are downtown or go downtown that like that sort of atmosphere.

I probably wont either, but if I do go downtown I would want to at least try it. Id much rather that that squeezing my way through a packed rap bar with a bunch of slicked up guidos wearing affliction shite.

Portland has 5 taprooms in the Draft Magazine top 100 and not a one of them has more than 20 taps. They all rotate 100% of their taps and don't have any beers that are permanent. I think Saraveza is on the list and only has 8 taps. My favorite hangout in downtown Portland only has 8 taps (Beermongers). I'm only mentioning the names in case any of you are ever in Portaland and happen to be in the mood for a beer...

There are several other taprooms that have made the list in the past couple of year that have 50ish taps (Apex Bar and Green Dragon), but again, they rotate 100% of their taps and do enough business to keep the beer fresh.

I personally prefer the smaller taprooms that aren't overly crowded, except for Friday/Saturday nights. I like interacting with the bartenders when they aren't busy.
