They need to do something that makes me want to drive past every other beer place in BR to frequent them.

Oh, I only went twice... once because I was already downtown and once for a specific event, but they did at least have more than BMC available and even a few decent selections. Nothing to rival the other places mentioned, but better than anywhere else I've been downtown.

Really just saying, they already failed once in that location trying to appeal to the niche.

Very true. The rooftop beer garden idea would have made for a good attraction, especially for day drinking.

Hopefully this new place can fix that niche.

I'd love this place to work out, and the last thing I'm trying to do is be a hater, but it is a simple fact that downtown is empty Sun-Thurs.

Plain and simple.

And even if it IS expanding, that is going to take time. Like years worth of time.

This bar will not be able to support itself in the years it will have to wait for an influx of new people.

Beyond that, if your bar is essentially closed 5 nights a week, your beer WILL GO BAD. Busier bars like Bulldog and Pelican have beer go bad. And they sell a decent amount of beer to regulars on their slow nights. And they have busy shifts Wed-Sun.

I would love to see this bar work, and hope it does, but that # of taps is going to mean a lot of beer going bad because they're basically closed 5 nights a week. (I know they're not technically "closed")

Hopefully I get proven wrong though.

What about the after work crowd? Much of a draw there?

They sprint to the burbs at 4:00.

I could actually see something like Courtyard Brewery working there. Ultra small, tap rotation, growlers, just add some chairs.

Which brewer want to take charge. Kickstarter?

Nope. Even Happys run and Lucy's taco Tuesday only attracts an okay crowd, and they're only going to those two places and then heading home by 8 because they have jobs.

The few places that do okay during the week really only do so because of customer loyalty. The men who are regulars at Happys because of the girls.. the people who are regulars at Red Star.. etc.

All of the new spots are empty on weekenights. (See: Huey's)
Cocktail bar, attractive employees, clean place, etc. EMPTY on a Thursday night.

Only get a crowd on weekends when they bring in a DJ with booty music.

No, they are all heading to the burbs.

Maybe if there was a nice place to have a few and wait out traffic though... just don't drink and drive.

sure, from 5-7, after that it's a ghost town. What the bars need to do is work together to get more people downtown on other nights. Maybe on Tuesdays, Greeks get in free with TFTC Tuesdays. On Wednesdays have a different feel with Red Dirt Wednesday where trashy LP girls wearing Daisy Dukes or denim skirts and Cowgirl boots get in free while they listen to Florida Georgia Line and drink whiskey shooters.
What about Maven Mondays, where the bar partners with local craft breweries and home brewers and features a different craft beer every Monday.

And I dont disagree with your reasoning. But the only way that changes is with places like this popping up and trying to make a difference there. Just keeping things the same downtown, throwing up our hands, and saying it wont get better isnt going to change anything.

This is true. I honestly think step 1 should be affordable places to live.

I almost got a place in Beauregard Town a while back. Would totally live in the area.

The counter to your argument is that they are doing the same thing here, just on a larger scale.

yea that sounds terrible. more choices doesn't always mean better, and in a lot of cases, it makes things worse.

You are right. The big dilemma in urban infill is always a chicken or the egg argument. Usually it is with grocery stores and dwelling units. Grocery stores don't want to open when there are no residents, and residents don't want to move somewhere with no grocery. Usually this is overcome with public financial incentives, such as TIFs, NMTCs, and GAP.

BR DDD has employed all of these. They primarily used those financial incentives for hotels and commercial businesses. The hotels serve to populate downtown with people during non-business hours. It's a little slower process of infill when compared to building full-time residential units, but it does work and BR is starting to see that.

I think downtown BR is really starting to climb the exponential curve as far as development is concerned.

Even with these ideas sounding as terrible as is, you shouldn't be paying cover to go to bars downtown, unless you're allowing underage people in. Its not Tigerland.

100% agree. Idk how the Roux house stays open if they are still charging anywhere from 10-20 bucks like they used to, or why people went to city bar or the office and paid cover. 3rd Street should be a place to bar hop and walk around. Wish they would also shut the street down for cars after a certain hour.

I would like this, but may be counter productive to getting people in the bars.

It's a simple fact of consumerism. People assume that if something is "free" that it must not be worthwhile. In the bar scene, a fee to get in the door often makes it seem more exclusive and keeps out some troublemakers. It helps from a marketing standpoint. What sounds more attractive "Ladies first drink is free." or "No cover for ladies and their first drink is free". Even if the cover is only $5, it makes it "seem" more valuable.

Although this post is not surprising considering your previous post

Eh. Roux House is one of the only bars downtown with a cover (I've never paid a cover at City Bar. I don't remember The Office, but I don't think I did there either).
And Roux House doesn't have nearly the crowd that City Bar gets.

In fact, I'd argue the only reason Roux even has a cover is because of the live music.

Cover might mean $$$ in places like Miami or Vegas, but people don't like bars with covers here.

The only ones that do well with them are bars that cater to underage people (Tigerland as a whole) or places like Fred's where you pay $5-$10 for AYCD.

Sooo how does that make sense for The Office, Pluckers back in the day, City Bar and the other I cant think of. Those saw infinitely more fights and trouble makers than Happys/Lucys and the like.
