My soon to be wife and most of our friends are all alcohol distributors so we never have empty bars. Otherwise, I wouldn't really mind this party, but I wouldn't throw my own. Seems tacky.

I've only heard of bar showers given by others for the couple. Gifts are liquor, wine, bar accessories. Always at someone's home.

So, you go to this party and bring alcohol to leave at this person's house so that you can drink it when you go over in future instances? The person who owns the house is not supposed to drink the alcohol left behind?

I'm just trying to understand this, I've only heard of this type of party in passing.

As usual, Gaston has a monumental misunderstanding of something.

Oh, well if one person agrees with your off the wall idea, that must make it the right one. FWIW, more people have agreed with me, so...

I can't even figure out what the OP is supposed to be doing here. I'm supposed to come to a bar and bring my own liquor for you to take home? The frick is that?

It doesn't make sense to hold it somewhere other than a person's house. It's basically a "shower" that a guy can benefit from. That's how I've always understood it. Rather than typical "shower" gifts, people bring alcohol to "stock the bar" of the new couple's home.

It's pretty tacky to host your own "shower", so I would think the same applies to hosting your own "stock the bar" party.

Not to stir the pot but it seems that it's not the OP that is throwing this for themselves.

"My buddy wants to throw a stock the bar party for me on Oct 8th" This was the first sentence of the post.

I'm not throwing it for myself. Re read the OP. Well we decided on The District as the location is centralized, price was right, and they allow us to bring our own food. We wound up deciding on District over Ale on Oak street.

Edit: just got a call from district stating that the owners do not want to rent out a section for that date because of it being "such a big game."

Have yall thought about moving it to Friday night, it might be hard to find the kind of space you want in New Orleans on a Saturday night in October with a LSU game. A lot of private spaces I can think of are probably already booked for weddings or other events by now.

It pains me to say it but I have to agree with Gaston on this one.

The fact that the OP is asking people who he doesn't feel comfortable inviting into his home to stock his bar just feels funny to me. Why does the OP need the size bar that would be stocked by 50 people if he doesn't entertain groups of that size? It just feels like it crosses the line from good idea/fun activity with friends to a try hard/obligation type party.

I make it a point to keep a well stocked bar so my guests will have something they enjoy when they stop in for a visit. It's a social thing. If you need help establishing a bar that's ok, invite me over to have some drinks with you and we can celebrate taking this next step in your life. Don't ask me to show up at a bar with a bottle of good brown just so you and your old lady can drink for free for the next year.

I never stated that I felt uncomfortable inviting them into my home. I just don't have enough room to have that amount of people at my place. Nothing to do with feeling uncomfortable. It's all friends

Exactly, with a note on the door, "out running errands but feel free to leave the bottle of Pappy under the mat."

So why do you feel it's necessary to have your friends stock a bar that large?

I don't understand how the capacity of my house and the amount of people coming to our party is relevant if it's no longer at the home. Especially since most are couples.

The home owner can drink it, but unless they're a lush, there's a good chance it won't all be gone by the time their friend comes back.

When everyone has kids random trips to visit friend's houses don't happen as often and at the same time its much easier to knock back a few or more after the kids go to sleep.
