Trying to decide where to go with the wife for a few days. We've never been to either.

Unfortunately this will be during Thanksgiving so the weather will be dogshit in both (colder in Paris).

I'm really looking from a food perspective here on this board from those that have been to either or both. I know Paris and France in General is world renowned, but Rome is no slouch either.

Thoughts? Recommendations?

I wasn't overly impressed with the food in Rome. I've never been to Paris, so I can't comment there.

ETA: if you do end up in Rome check out the Trastevere neighborhood. That's where we found the best food/atmosphere.

Was just in both last month. As far as food is concerned Paris blow Rome out of the water in my opinion. Now if we're talking all of France vs. all of Italy they are much more evenly matched. But if you want to focus on eating and drinking, between those two cities Paris is your answer.

Been to Paris 4X. Rome 2x (last time was this March).

While Rome is great in its own right, I think it's simply a no-brainer you should go to Paris - if you've never been to either. So easy & cheap to get around on the Metro.

You absolutely can't go wrong either way. Those are two of my favorite cities in the world. I have been to both numerous times. I was in Rome for Easter 2014. It is a beautiful city and there is so much history there. Paris is at least as beautiful. If you like museum hopping, you will not be disappointed. Paris has the best food and restaurants in the world IMO. You can flip a coin, but if you are asking me for an answer, I will say PARIS.

Does the fact it's at least 10-15 degrees colder in Paris when we are going matter? It will also be a bit rainy in both, I think slightly more rain in Rome.

But yeah, I figured from a F&D perspective Paris would be the winner.

I want Paris but the wife is leaning Rome simply because of the weather. She gets cold in the desert at high noon.

For food? Paris. I don't think Rome is a particularly great food town relative to other cities in Italy/Europe. From neighborhood joints to Michelin starred places, I'd rather eat in Paris.

ETA: if you've not been to Europe, I think Paris is safer and easier to navigate relative to Rome. It's also generally less chaotic, so I'd say you'll have a better experience there as a relative newbie.

Will do brother. Thanks a lot. I'm definitely on the Paris train. There's something magical about the thought of it. And I just finished a book set in Montmarte in the 1890s so it's been on my mind.

We will have about 5 full days in any city. So we will consider taking a day trip on one day.

Barcelona was also in consideration.

Got a map for Barcelona as well. An argument exists that Barcelona is a better food city than Paris. Although Paris seems to be re examining and re discovering its food culture.

From Paris, take a day trip to the Champagne region and you can also do some WWI recon if you are into that. The cathedral at Reims is my favorite in Europe. A lot of history has gone through that spot

Food wise, Paris is light years better than Rome, which is overrun with religious tourists year round who care very little about food. But Rome is damned ancient, so if you are a hardcore art historian or enamored of Acient Rome, it will make you happier. It is also a bit friendlier than Paris, to my experience. Rome to Florence is just a couple hrs on the train, so it is very easy to do a bit of both cities on one trip.

But if you don't like looking at churches, paintings, or ruins, go to Paris...and dress warmly.

Ditto Hungryone above. Been to both, food is great in Rome but Paris is better. The food is not an exaggeration is Paris, from small cafes to high end my expectations were exceeded.

I was just looking at day trips to Champagne. My wife would love that.

Would it be insane to take a day trip to London? It's only 2 hours by train. Of course I'd only have 9-10 hours there.
