This. I've been to both and Rome is my favorite.

I dont think it would be insane, however I am the type of traveler who wants to stay somewhat in similar region. So I am fine to go to Barcelona and tour the costa brava, but wouldnt want to take ferry to Morocco.
London is such a big undertaking, that will be an exhausting day.

Agree that it's a waste of time in Paris to schlep all the way to London for just a day. If you don't want to spend the entire trip in the city, it's easy enough to visit the Normandy beaches, or Versailles, or Riems, etc. I highly recommend Pascal at www.parisnicehome.com for a short term apt rental. The properties he manages are in great locations, and the rate includes free international long distance, satellite TV, washer/dryer, dishwasher, nespresso machine, and equipped kitchens. I stayed at one of his properties last year and it was a great value.

Both cities are fantastic, imo, and should be on your "to do" list. Rome has a couple of great restaraunts I can recommend, BUT Paris is a much better food city. And it's fricking beautiful everwhere you look and should be your choice if it's your first trip to Europe. In fact, it was the first city I visited in Europe. If you want to take a break, I'd take a fast train to Provence. Really cool part of France.

If it is your first trip to Europe, I think you should do Rome.
I would really consider doing 3 days in Rome and 3 days in Florence though as I think Florence is the better of the 2 cities.
Paris is great, but something about Italy makes me feel like I am another world.

The question was from a food perspective. I like Rome but . . .

Re: the day trips - We took the chunnel train from London to Paris and it is quite an experience, but I would not do it as a day trip. It is doable but I would wait until you have more time to spend in London. We did Riems as a day trip and had a great time. It is a fast and east ride on the high speed train from downtown Paris. We went to several Champagne houses. We arranged in advance to have a tour of Veuve Cliquot. They take you down into the ancient Roman limestone caves where they store the Champagne at the perfect constant temperature no matter how hot or cold it is outside. Right down the street is Pommery which also has a user friendly tasting room. Although you go for the Champagne, it is almost worth the trip just to see the Cathedral. It is where all of the French Kings and Queens for the past 1000 years have been crowned. The stained glass is something to see. Some of it is 800 years old and some of it was designed by Marc Chagal in the 1970's. If you are a Monet fan, Givernney is an easy day trip. So is Chartres. The D-Day beaches are a very long day trip. With only 5 days I would stay in Paris the whole time.

I love both, but if you're choosing one, it's Paris, and it's not particularly close.

So you didn't do an organized tour to Champagne/Reims?
If you took the train to Reims, how did you get around to the vineyards and the cathedral?

No organized tour. It is very easy. The high speed train to Reims runs from Gare d' L Est train station. You can buy tickets in advance but we just bought ours that day. The train goes 150 plus MPH and the ride only takes 45 minutes. In Reims, the Cathedral is just a few blocks and a short walk from the train station. From there it is a short cab ride to the Champagne houses such as Veuve Cliquot and Pommery. We actually took the city bus there. The bus stop for the Champagne houses is by St. Remy Church which is also worth a look. There are other Champagne houses closer to the train station. Mumms is one. Right by the train station is a nice downtown area with outdoor cafes. When it is time to go back, just take the train back to Gare d' L Est. Piece of cake. We toasted our 25th anniversary in Reims.

One other thing. You mentioned vineyards. There are no vineyards there. The grapes are grown away from town. In Reims there are the production facilities and tasting rooms. The grapes are shipped there. Pick out the House you want to tour and make reservations on line well in advance. We did Veuve. You can just walk in to the tasting rooms but you must schedule a tour.

OP,
Where do you stay at? If New Orleans, start making friends with Patrick from Bar Vin. He will get you set up at Tattinger and other spots

I'm friends with a lot of guys in the biz, particularly on the wine side, such as glazers, republic and beam. Most are pretty high up at this point and I'm sure could make some calls at Vueve in particular.
We live in Lakeview. I could go to Vin I guess.

I agree with both. I have friends at Glazer and they set us up in the Napa Valley. And I'm sure Patrick has a connection or two.

Dont take this the wrong but skip Veueve. Its the Wal Mart of Champagne. Go to 1 big house but spend more time at the grower houses drinking shite we cant get here.

Any places in particular?

Let me find dude we used. But we hired some English dude who lives in Burgundy and is a private wine buyer/shady wine industry person. He picked us up at Epernay train station in a van with a cooler full of grower champagne. Our train was late so we missed one appt but we went to this house, literally a house, called Vauversin and then Tattinger. Im sure google could help.
There is so much great champagne that never even makes it to Paris much less the LV

Never been to either, but honeymooned in Saint Martin which is half owned by France. Lots of French nationals there who prefer a tropical climate rather than Europe. Great restaurants there. I will say it was the best food I've ever eaten in my life. Paris would be awesome.
