I bought a gio thu (Viet version of hogs head cheese) at the St. Mary Tet festival. It was gross.

The best ever was at Martin's Wine Cellar. I was shocked! I have gotten it from Don's, Best Stop, etc....so to think I'd find my favorite at martin's was surprising to me.

and Taffe's. Herb opened his store back up in Picayune (I believe) but I'm pretty sure Taffe's just closed up shop. Absolute shame to lose that place...

Trietler's was in Meraux (next to Chalmette). Believe the post-Katrina location is Picayune...

Well, it's the best I've had. But, I haven't had a whole lot. I did locate Jerry Lee's store on my map, in case I ever got into that area.

As a general rule I stay away from anything that needs gelatin to hold it together.... So I won't touch anything sold in a store.

That being said, I have a friend who lives in Hahnville and his Dad makes his own homemade HogsHead cheese....long story short, I'll eat his.

Although it took quite a few Miller High Life's to get me to make that leap...

If you like the flavor, but have people who are turned off by the contents, Bellue's makes a "chicken glace' " that's really good.

Best around here is Murray's grocery in St.Amant.

If i'm in BR I would have to say Jerry Lee's is the best in that area. I have eaten the Turkey cheese from Thibideaux area (I think) that was very good too.

Let it sit in fridge overnight soaking in vinegar. Then try it on a Saltine the next day. The first one will make you pucker up, the second is great!

I'm not sure who makes it for Martin's. I'll have to check the wrapper next time I pick some up.

I grew up in Hahnville and they did make some damn good stuff out there.
