You've definitely missed out. Do yourself a favor and go to Dangs and get one. Funny thing is, I bet 60% of the people who read 225 don't know what the frick a banh mi is. You have failed to realize the culinary cognizance of the F&D board

Quite possibly and I suppose they believe it to be pretentious too even though they have no idea what it is.

Now go try everything else Vietnamese.

It is a great cuisine and has some French influence, so it really fits here. New Orleans has serious Viet influences into the best restaurants in town. All the really great chefs here love it.

You are hooked now, like I was in like the mid 90s...

m just curious how there is enough places that have banh mi to make it a legit category? 225 trying really hard to sound hip

I do agree with op in this regard. Banh mis are not common in BR and it probably was put in there to be hip

Agreed, I think i had a total misconception of Vietnamese food in my mind. That sandwich changed my view.

What other good places are around here?

You've redeemed yourself. Give pho (pronounced fuh) a shot (especially if you're hung over). I'm a huge fan of a good pork vermicelli. Banh mi is the pinnacle, IMO.

Also, I hear good things about Kim Ahn's.

You are in Baton Rouge, so I have no clue. Just ask for recs here and go head first. You won't regret it. There are some places here that elevate the cooking a bit, from the small ethnic mom and pop places. I love them both equally. Not sure Baton Rouge has that level yet.

Little Saigon on Florida and Sherwood next to the Baskin Robbins.

Spring Rolls for an app ... extra peanut sauce.

#10 with grilled chicken ... save some peanut sauce for that.

Order a combination Banh Mi to go for later.

Dang puts a ton of sauce and other non traditional things on their sandwiches. While good, not at all authentic. Try some other stuff if you see it. It should be cheap.

Dang's use to be my go to joint after Sunday mass during the late 90's-early 2000's but since then it has changed hands and is not the same. But if you're ever in New Orleans East, Dong Phuong Bakery hands down has some good banh mi(buy 10 get 1 free, put the veggies on the side). There's also a restaurant that is attached to the bakery for some good Vietnamese food.

There's always that one concentrated bite of jalapeno that screws up my mouth.

Perhaps we were conceived by different mailmen.

I love heat, just not that painful cross section bite of jalapeno chock-full of seeds and membrane.

Ahhh. One more life changed forever by the F & D Board. Sort of like Make a Wish Foundation.
