Is there a difference between the cheap or expensive cables? Just purchased a Samsung 4k and the Best Buy salesman tried to sell me an $80 monster cable. I stuck with the $10 Rocket Fish

I splurged this time and got the 10ft high speed 18mbps HDMI cables from monoprice instead of the 10mbps ones just because I'm pushing 4K and want to ensure no bottlenecks.
I paid $4.69 per cable instead of $3.99

More expensive obviously means better.
I buy all mine from Monoprice. I wonder how many mouth breathers they get to buy the super expensive cables.

That's what best buy makes money on. Mark up from crap like that.
All you need is an hdmi 2.0 I believe. Pretty cheap on amazon

I believe I read somewhere once that due to the nature of HDMI cables, they all transmit a signal the same way. Therefore any cable that works is as good as any other cable, regardless of price.
Is that accurate?

IOW, per the link I posted, it's a High Speed cable with Ethernet, the same as my 2008 Monoprice jobs except for the Ethernet. No one should be confused by the listing of all the specs it supports.
ETA: Oops, I see there's now a "Premium High Speed HDMI Cable" label. This is less than a year old. Before, they were saying High Speed cables support all the current standards, including everything Premium supports. I suspect that's still true. Presser here:

In any case, Monoprice has Premium 6' for $4.49, so get that.

I work in the AV business from the corporate side, so i manage the top AV businesses in the state.
all my guys buy from monoprice and big distributors in huge bulk on all their cables. they pay no more than $3 per HDMI.
they have all told me it makes no difference whatsoever, digital is digital.
they do however tell customers its the "high end" cables and some charge as much as $100 bucks for them, but they are literally $3 a piece. lol
best buy and those places make all their money on accessories.
Your video source(DIRECTV, Netflix, etc) and TV will determine your picture quality, not the type of HDMI cable.

Cables aren't described that way. For the proper terminology, see:
Lots of info on that site you link about HDMI 2.0
The real fun is going to be all the HDCP 2.2 issues that will arise.

The way I describe it to non-tech people is that HDMI cables transit ones and zeros. No cable can make a 1 look better than another cable.

You definitely need the platinum diamond cables for maximum signal.

Got some new cheap cables from Amazon last week. Saved a ton over walmart prices

Speaker cables are the same way. Monster Cable vs Coat Hangers

Always buy cables online vs. brick and mortar stores. You will save a ton of money.

not altogether true..4K requires HDMI with more throughput but having said that, those cables are $4 at monoprice so if you are having trouble with an older HDMI cable its not expensive to see if thats the problem.
remember HDMI has evolved over the years..we're up to HDMI 2.2 and some of the older cables will literally not pass 4K through as well as faster ones.
also some of the newer ones do 'arcing' which passes audio back through the cable and older HDMI cables cant handle that.
the whole ethernet-option is a different story and i'm not sure thats ever going to take off.

Bluejeanscable.com is where I buy all of my cables/interconnects from, they're a great company.
