I have a World Cup question for the MSB soccer fans

In relation to the rest of the world, why are the American women so much better than the men?
Why do our women dominate in the World Cup but our men can't?

Short answer: our best male athletes are playing football/basketball first/foremost
Not necessarily true across the board with our wimmenz.

Because Soccer is the #1 or 2 sport among women. It usually is a compliment to Football at American colleges.

Our best women athletes aren't split up into other leagues. The best American male athletes are playing NBA, NFL and MLB. Also American universities have had women's soccer for many years in order to comply with Title IX.

The rest of the world doesn't really care, whereas soccer is the most common sport in America for girls. Likely just have the largest talent pool that actively plays into college, and our high school-college system is more than adequate
On the other hand, youth development for males in the US is way behind. Kids sign with clubs in Europe when they are 13 and work their way up through academies. Our high school system pales in comparison, and by the time our players are in college, their counterparts in Europe either have or are trying to break into first-team action for their clubs. Obviously, it's also the 4th most popular sport at best for high school athletes.

Cant be sure of the accuracy, but I thought I remember reading 60% of women soccer players are from US or Canada.
I'm sure 1999 helped as well.

Freedom. Seriously. We invested in women's sports when the rest of the world didn't for a long time.

it's very difficult to be very good at men's soccer. there are about 4-5 powers and then about 30 teams that are similar. we're in the 2nd group

Our best and brightest play NFL, MLB, and NBA.

Because if Calvin Johnson played goalie for the U.S., the rest of the world wouldn't get a trophy.

I wouldn't go that far, there are some athletic freaks of nature that play soccer.

Calvin Johnson isn't one who I would want. Take a guy off the Volleyball team who can't serve aces.
He will be 6'4" to 6'8" can jump out of gym and has great hand eye coordination. You can teach him how to drop kick.

Quite simply, women only have one major sport to pull them away from soccer and that's basketball. So you have a much better talent pool to pull from.
Women's soccer in the U.S. has also been really well developed in the youth levels at this point.

The fact that the women's soccer team is filled with a bunch of white chicks tells me that our best and brightest women aren't playing soccer either

Well, women's tennis gets their fair share of elite athletes.

Because almost all of our athletic and explosive athletes play basketball and football instead.

Imagine if Barry Sanders or Bo Jackson had been soccer players. Messi would have been looking up to them instead of Maradona.
