Pretty much

The population of the city itself has remained steady at around 3,000,000 over the last 25 years, but it has become much wealthier. A lot of impoverished citizens moved away (some to the near suburbs, some moved to the South), and the younger, wealthier professional class has exploded here. I live not far from where Cabrini Green used to be, and it's amazing what that area looks like now - there is an uber-expensive British boarding school, an REI, brand new condos, etc, etc.

The legacy costs are what's keeping the city from exploding. I honestly think the best thing that could happen right now is the city going bankrupt (or nearly there). New York was very close to it in 1975, and it was the best thing that ever happened to NYC.

Definitely. Most of the city is very nice and liveable. A lot of cool attractions. Just go the right time of year.

I've been to Chicago. Stay out of the south part and it's awesome. Hot women and very clean. Nola really is filthy in comparison.

actually cleaner

Where the f are you staying? I lived there for three years, corner Lincoln and Irving Park, and hung out a lot on the South Side during summer, and Chicago ... well, I love the place, but clean hardly describes the city. One of the nice things about the snow was how it covered up all the trash and garbage everywhere.

There we agree. Pretty and friendly; #1 place I ever lived for agreeable, plentiful, quality female companionship.

The winter does suck in Chicago but you're really exaggerating here. March-November are fine to be outside if you know how to put a sweatshirt/jacket on and aren't a giant pussy. So pretty much 1/4 of the year sucks balls. But it's not really that much different than a lot of the Northeast- Boston was much more miserable than Chicago this winter. I love DC and have spent a ton of time there but as a midwesterner sometimes the summers are simply miserable for me there with the humidity. I can't handle being fully dressed outside and you start to overheat and just sweat buckets.

Some people are more hot-natured and others are more cold-natured. You're forgetting that most of this board lives in the Deep South. As a result, we're either more acclimated to a hot climate, or we self-selected by choosing to live in a place where we don't really experience winter.

I don't care for Northern winters. I wear jeans during the summer--but I would never call someone a wuss for thinking Mississippi summers are too hot.

As far as Chicago, I've been there a couple of times. It's OK but not great, and while I wouldn't be averse to a return visit, it's not something that would be high on my priority list.

Chicago has its good and its bad....I just moved here from Philly. The Chicago suburbs lack the charm that the Philly burbs have...mostly strip malls. The city is clean, and the lake is beautiful. The deep dish pizza is excellent. The people are a lot nicer than northeasterners.....I'll check back in when winter hits.

Take the tour of Wrigly field since the Cubs are not in town. One of the best tours I've ever done. They take you through every nook and cranny of the stadium.

Definitely an upgrade. I've been to Philthydelphia a couple of times.

My sons godfather is from Chicago and I met him down here in Louisiana for college and we ended up both being in the same fraternity.

He texted me recently saying he wants to come back to LA. Said he forgot how frickin brutal the winters are. He's doing grad work up there but wants to come down here. He loves Chicago but he sent a picture of his truck after a snow/ice overnight. Have to chip your way into the damn car lol.

Glad you're enjoying it here. I've been living here the past year and a half and absolutely love it. Sure, the winters are no picnic and as a southerner I'll never get used to them, but it's worth it for the kick arse summers and an all around amazing city.

I recommend going somewhere to catch the Blackhawks game tonight, the city loves this team and the bars will be electric (I'm watching at home so I can flip to the Hawks during LSU/ULL commercials). If you need any restaurant or bar recs, just holla

Like everyone has said, it's ridiculously fun from May to August. I disagree with Abu on the cost of living. I know some ballers who live in pretty humble abodes there. You need to be rich to enjoy living there, otherwise you have to live way out in the burbs.

More like May-October, with good days in November and December. It doesn't really get awful till mid January.
