So is the chart

The Toyota Camry Hybrid gets the same gas mileage as the TDI, and has more bells and whistles.
The Rav4 also is cheaper than the both, and still gets good enough mileage for me.
I'll likely get the Rav4. It is a good car, I've heard good things about them, and I enjoyed the experience at the Toyota dealership. They are offering lifetime free oil changes and the best incentives.

Was looking at a VW Passat TDI.
Truecar.com has Passat SE TDI average consumers paid $28,004. You would need to check/add any specific upgrades if that was included in the car you were interested in. You will pay ~ a $2400 premium for the TDI engine compared to the gas turbo, maybe more depending on demand in your area. I don't think Toyota reliability is as good as it was in the past, but still would think it would be better longer term than a VW.

Sadly, it will be useless for anyone who isn't able to figure it out using basic arithmetic since it counts on a price of $3.75/gallon.
Dude its just a ballpark tool for looking at savings on gas milage, not to hedge against fuel cost for a multibillion dollar trucking company.

Also look at the maintenance costs over life of the vehicle. My gf drives a jetta and it's a pain in the arse to find a mechanic to work on it and/or do routine maintenance. She ends up brining it to the dealer to get oil changes which is double what a regular shop charges.

MPG and an audio jack is the only thing that matters when I look for my new car in a couple years

I've never looked into it to see why, but I've heard these types of incentives are a scam. Might be worth checking out.

Forget the dealer promised service. You are paying for it in the price of the car AND they will twist your arm every time you go back for something not covered by the service plan.
I swear I believe a lot of minor recalls are simply manufacturers trying to get owners back to the dealers.

Nope you have the choice to be screwed by the car dealer.
The leges and Bobby are not giving you a choice when they screw you to give filmmakers billions.

I would have left after the first time he returned from sales manager.
I always tell them I am a cash buyer today. I am going to buy a car at the right price. If I walk off their lot I guarantee them I will not return to their lot. Then I ask them to make their best offer.
Sales managers have to know how serious of a buyer you are before they will negotiate. An owner of multiple dealerships(from Ford to Mercedes) told me that 85% of his sales happen on the first visit of a customer. IF they walk off the lot they only have a 15% chance they will return- He teaches his sales people to NOT let people leave his lot.

Paying in cash doesn't help them. They make money on financing.

Standard
She lives in BR and I'm close to Houma so the time we spend together I don't really get under the car, but I have called a few different shops and they won't work on Volkswagen. She's tried to get her oil changed at places other than the dealer in BR and most places tell her they can't even do that. The dealership charges like $100 per oil change.
She only has 55k miles on the car and the A/C already went out. She took it to the dealer 4 times before they decided they had to change everything. She was pissed and threw a fit that a car less than 2 years old with under 60k miles should have to get the A/C system fixed so the owner of the dealership called her the next day and offered to cover half the costs and give her 5 free oil changes. The total cost to fix the car was $1,200 so after only paying half and then 5 free oil changes she only comes out of pocket $100. Her next car will not be a Volkswagen after her experience with this one.

Gotcha. Yea we have the TDI and I've heard they seem to be more reliable.
I think I found a diesel place that will do the oil changes. Although we've still got one more before the warranty is out.

I'm sitting down with you talking numbers, I'm fricking serious. I can get it if I'm screwing around, I went to several dealerships to get a feel for the cars then left. If he'd have made me a decent deal, I would have bought right then and there. Instead he chose to presumably try and take advantage of me, and ultimately insulting me by going to his sales manager three times "to see what he could do", "I'm working for you, I'm going to bat for you", and the MOST insulting phrase I've heard from multiple dealerships, "we're already losing money"
I know one thing, dealerships aren't going to make a deal where they lose money, it's insulting to imply that.

always wait till the end of the month to buy a vehicle. you can get better deals as they are trying to get their quotas out for the month

Trying. I don't have A/C, and I've put it off a long time, but it's getting fricking hot. FTR, I haven't let any dealership know that I'm in this predicament. I'm not going to rush into a bad deal, but if one will give me a deal I think is acceptable, I'll take it.
It just seems some of them try to take advantage of me since I'm younger, I think. They want to feed me all kinds of bullshite lines.

I just go to the lot and pick two or three I would buy, leave and call in ask them to fax or email me a price. Then I call their competition and do the same.
