I always tell her to act indifferent to the car when she looks at it or drives it and don't show emotional attachment. She's gotten pretty good at it.

this is so stupid, what difference does it make if you act excited or not, just know what you'll pay and that's it.

If the dealer knows you are set on this one car in particular, he knows he holds the bargaining chip. Whereas, if he knows you're willing to go next door and purchase the best deal, he knows he has to give his best deal to sell a car.....Otherwise, if you are dead set on a car, and act excited about, he's going to smell the blood in the water and know he can get a little more out of me, because you're less likely to go take a deal somewhere else.

As someone in sales, if I know the client is on-board with the product and happy with what I offered I'm going to keep my current proposal as the one to consider.

If he is not showing interest or is hesitant, I will come back with other options that are typically less expensive or offer more "bank for their buck".

yeah but showing that you really like it, means you are serious and so they need to be on point if they want to make a sale. you act like you don't like it they won't call you back with a better deal.

If it were as easy as knowing what you'll pay, this thread wouldn't exist, Will Cover wouldn't have created a guide, and there wouldn't be thousands of articles and books about negotiating the purchase of a car.

I always know what I'll pay, but that doesn't mean I won't use every advantage I can to get an even lower price or extra incentives. They do the same thing by trying to hold hostage your driver's license, keys to your trade in, or a good faith check. It's all stupid, but it's part of the negotiating game.

I like your Jeep, but Toyota is offering 4k off MSRP.

As opposed to

"Omg, I've got a have this Jeep"

Who is getting a better deal?

if they know you aren't considering other options, what incentive do they have to give you a good deal. if they know 100% you're going to buy that vehicle, why should offer you a deal.

whereas, if they know you are looking at other options and cars, then they are going to work harder to keep you from buying something else.

what about this doesn't make sense?

in an area with multiple dealers of same brand, you don't have to worry about this quite as much. you could always use the "__ dealer has the features i'm looking for at a better price. what can you do to beat it?" method. if you have one dealer with one car in mind, and the dealer knows that, not likely to get a good deal. they have too much leverage in that situation.

Because, sadly, it's all a giant game. Because the sole objective of the salesperson is to extract as much money from you as possible. Thus, the counterpressure is for the customers to act like they can take their business elsewhere.

I'm now on day 3 of this game with Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep

We'll probably have a deal made this afternoon, I'm hoping. We're pretty close....less than a $1k at this point.

that were going home and calling them telling them what you'll pay comes into play, if they call back you know they want to deal. at the end of the day they still need to sell the car, for most dealers volume is their play. i would never go in planning to buy on the spot and if they did offer what i wanted on the spot i'd know i was offering to much.

all i'm saying is all these games are unnecessary, on both parts, the key is just to let them come back to you if you still don't like the deal tell them they need to get closer, they'll call you in a week tops ready to move the car.

Stop now if you are less than 1k apart tell the SM that and offer to split it

500 more bucks on your part is worth not having to engage in negotiation any longer

Simply tell him you will split the 1K and if he agrees you will sign today

Split the 1K and 4 oil changes and/or window tinting would be my final offer.

The car isn't on his lot, he's lucky I'm dealing with it on it.

I'll pay him the $200 he wants to go fetch it for me.

At what point does the value of your time enter the equation? Negotiating a car is a painful experience, I'd pay more and invest less time.

I know, but I want what I want.

Luckily, there is another car exactly like the one I want at another dealership.
