re: Hypothetical situation - Bayou Tiger
I am financially conservative in some ways but have been pretty successful building net worth over the years. Incidentally, I will also be 37 years old a few months from now. My perspectives are as somebody who grew up middle class and is now upper middle class, so I can't comment on what "rich peop...

re: Who do you like more for PBP for LSU baseball? - Bayou Tiger
[quote] I did the same thing. I used my real name as my first screen name when I first joined TD but quickly learned that's not a good idea so Chicken allowed me to start a new account with my current screen name. My first screen name has been 'retired' for a long time. I can't even sign into it an...

re: Texas Property Tax Protest - Bayou Tiger
It's probably not as common in states with lower property taxes. When I lived in Louisiana my annual property tax was around $1000. Now that I live in Texas it is over $15000 per year. So naturally an entire niche industry has evolved in Texas around saving mere percentage points on these taxes....

re: Texas Property Tax Protest - Bayou Tiger
Jubally is the best option in the Houston area. It is a flat $75 fee instead of the ridiculous 40-60% of tax savings that the others charge. You get a free estimate of your tax savings, and if you pay you get the exact report to hand to the property tax folks in the format that they need. Jubally's ...

re: Has anyone found the Coffee flavored peanut M&M's? - Bayou Tiger
Yes. The coffee ones are great, although I wouldn't want them to permanently replace the regular peanut M&Ms. I stumbled into them at a CVS and also tried the honey nut, which were disappointing. Honey and chocolate don't go as well together as coffee and chocolate....

re: Company I am interviewing with won't give me employee handbook - Bayou Tiger
If somebody in an interview asked me for the entire handbook instead of asking specific questions, that would be a negative. Why not zero in the key issues that might make a difference and ask about those?...

re: Resume help, particularly O&G guys - Bayou Tiger
Don't list too many duties if they are mundane, but the scope of work and basin are important. Focus on numbers and value add. But keep your resume on a single page if at all possible. Here is an example. As a caveat I do not work in unconventionals or on the service side, so just pulling stuff ...

re: Energy Stock Picks; Please Rate - Bayou Tiger
I don't own any GPOR stock, but it is a good sign that the banks recently reaffirmed their borrowing base even with the big drop in commodity prices. A guy I know works there and has good things to say about the company and its future. Personally I just don't trade E&P companies that are that small....

re: Oil stocks...are you buying? - Bayou Tiger
I don't know what to expect Monday, but I have resigned myself to the fact that I don't know what is going to happen any day. Whenever I take on a new position in oil and gas, I set up a couple of limit orders. The first sells the stock if it goes up more than 20% or so. The other limit order buy...

How much value does a new pool add (as a percent of cost)? - Bayou Tiger
We will be building an outdoor pool, spa, and kitchen setup for this summer. This is a house we plan to live in for a long time and maybe forever, so we are not looking to sell it anytime soon. However, for personal finance and net worth accounting, how much value will this pool add to the house?...

re: Payday Lending - Bayou Tiger
I'm fine with it. If the profit margins are really that obscene after factoring in the default rate, then why haven't competitors come in and driven the loan rates down? And if this is the profitable interest rate that the market has found for this target group, they why should we deny these peo...

re: Spinoff thread: How much did your parents save for your college educ? - Bayou Tiger
My parents got me a used car and paid for the monthly insurance and gasoline. Scholarships covered tuition, room, board, meals, and summer internships covered play money. Of course that was back in the day before free student loans jacked up all of the costs. I would hate to go to college these days...
