Just some off the bull shite I've heard in the past few days. I guess they thought since I'm young they'd just rake me over the coals and take advantage of me.
So, we just bought a new car a couple of weeks ago. I did get the paperwork from the dealer with the dealer cost, and the breakdown. (I had mine from a previous purchase, so I showed it to him and asked to see it on the vehicle I was looking at). I told him, I would pay $500 over the true dealer cost of the car.
It took an hour of back and forth (I had a trade in as well to negotiate), but I did get the price I wanted.
As we were completing things, he showed me his paperwork and told me that we were "bracket people", that the bottom line cost of the car meant they were not making as much money as they wanted on the car, so they put the final amount in brackets.
My wife was impressed, but I know it's just salesmanship talk. They still made money off of me.

I am terrible at negotiation. I hate the song and dance with it. I've probably been ripped off on every car I've bought. I wish I was better at it, but the whole process is already so damn time consuming. Last car I bought, I was in the dealership for 4 hours and I barely negotiated at all. I didn't pay the asking price, and ended up getting more for my trade-in than what they initially offered, but still probably paid more than I could have.

I am sure i have been screwed also. But I have put two dealers against each other for about a week before I finally purchased. Kept getting a price via email then sending it to the other dealer.

CarMax. Now, the thing is, they don't negotiate. You take it or leave it. But, there is no BS whatsoever.
9 times out of 10, the price is too high, so you walk away. (Good news is, you can check the price online). If you find one online that has a decent price, you go check it out, and if you like it, you buy it.
Most of the time, you don't get the best deal for the car. But every once in a while, you do. And, you don't have to deal with any of the BS.

When you get down to two dealers that are close, ask to take it home to test drive.
The next day bring it to the other dealer and say
"They are selling me this vehicle for_____ can you beat it?"
They will beat the price.
Dealers love to beat a competitor and drive the test drive vehicle back for you.

IF you are not good at negotiation- join a credit union and buy on CU day- pre arranged discounts etc.
Not the best deal you can get but also not the worse.
Many organizations have fleet price deals now, AAA, Credit Unions- etc

I haven't been terrible at the negotiation, but I haven't had one offer a car to me where I want. I don't know if my expectations are wrong though. I looked at the carsdirect thing, and that price is 3% below "invoice" cost. So, I've been aiming at 3% off the invoice cost, I just haven't been offered that yet.
It's also not helping that they don't have the vehicle I want on their lot. I could be flexible, but I don't want to be. I want that particular car, and I don't want to settle on something lesser because I will be unhappy if I do settle.

This seems like a big knock against you- why would they deal on a car that they're going to have to order? It's not going to reduce their inventory, so why haggle on something you don't have to sell?

Dealer trade. They get the car I want, they send one of theirs. They're still selling a car and making money.

So how did you come up with the price that you think the vehicle you want is worth?

I would drive to Houston to buy it. A lot more dealers there than in Lake Charles, with more volume, so they are more willing to negotiate and deal.

I looked at cars direct and I looked at some jeep forums to see what people were paying. 3% of invoice seemed to be a common reply amongst them, and it's near the car direct price as well

it always amazes me how big a deal people make about all the negotiations of buying a car. its simple tell them what you want to pay and then wait till they call you, if you have to have the car then you call them back and offer a little more. it's pretty simple. i've never had anybody take my drivers license, that's just crazy.

Heading to the BMW dealership today to test drive a CPO 335i. A little different for used, but looking forward to some negotiating.

i just always say i'm looking but not serious when on the lot, and then call from the office later or email them telling them what i'll do. you can tell pretty quick if they are wanting to deal.

What's the deal on not giving them your DL?
Posted on 6/20/14 at 11:01 am to Me4Heisman
I don't know, i think people over complicate things.

you try walking out of the showroom when they won't give you the deal you want, then you're like shite, I don't have my license, then you have to wait for them to give it back to you. Which they're going to be trying to sell you while you are waiting on them to give you the DL back.

A different Sales Manager than the one that was at the dealership the other day just gave me a call.
He's going to email me some TrueCar.com and offer me a price based on that.

When you go in looking for one specific car, it makes negotiating more difficult.
When I buy for me, I don't care about the color and some of the options. So I have a lot more negotiating power because I can settle on multiple cars from multiple dealerships and the salesman knows that.
When buying for my wife, she wants a specific car, in 1-2 colors, and wants all the bells and whistles. It's a lot more difficult to negotiate because I have fewer alternative options.
ETA: I always tell her to act indifferent to the car when she looks at it or drives it and don't show emotional attachment. She's gotten pretty good at it. She even called out the finance guy one time for trying to guilt me in to a stupid paint warranty by using her need to drive a fancy looking car...it was awesome.
