Good question. I'm not sure. My first soap (came with the kit) was Omega, which is also Proraso.

The sum of what I read is that you need a lot of practice to get with a DE razor the closeness that a cartridge gets.
This isn't true at all - my very first DE shave was closer than any cartridge shave I ever had. Of course, being cautious, it probably took me an hour.
You need a lot of practice to approach the time efficiency of a good cartridge - but I shaved with cartridges from about 18 to about 45 - nothing but irritation, stubble and the like. I have a heavy, coarse beard and somewhat sensitive skin. Even with basic, mild DE equipment I get a better shave. Once I find the right balance between aggressiveness and comfort, I will probably be only a little slower than a cartridge, but enjoy the shave more and have it closer.

Intriguing but still scared.
Want to do a barber straight razor shave first to see what I am missing.

Where do you guys put your brush after you use it? Do I need to buy a stand for it because I read it needs to dry upside down? Also whats the best way to get the assorted blades? I see yall saying 100 blades for $10, but the assorted are like 20 for $10-15?

Check Amazon. That's were I got my Merkur, stand, brush, and blades from... Before I brought my stand, I laid it on its side with most of the hair (mine is a badger hair brush)over the sink so it doesn't flatten. My brush and the stand are Escali (I think thats how it is spelled) and are great. The key is finding the right water/soap ratio to make a great lather. Some may benefit from a pre-shave lotion (baby oil works great) to soften the hair. Check the review on Amazon for the Merkur 180 - it is one of the best and most detailed...
My first shave with it was far superior to any my Mach 3 ever did. Will never go back!

I am between the merkur 38hd or the EJ DE 89lbl. I'm looking into the 180 also. Not sure which direction I want to go. Trying to figure out the pros and cons of each different brand/model.

It doesn't make that big of a difference. The merkur HD and the EJ DE89 are both excellent safety razors that you can't go wrong with. Its all about the blade.Derby is the dullest blade and I would start with that. Then you can move it the sharpness scale up to feather blades. I personally use personna blades (crystal). The blades have a medium sharpness to them.

Just started shaving with a safety razor for the first time in 25 years. First few shaves were rough but its great now. How long does the blade last on a saefty razor?
I keep blades longer than most people would. I can get probably 10 shaves out of an Astra super chrome. They come $10 for a 100 pack (10 cents/ blade)
As to the fellow looking for a sampler pack, I paid $20-25 for a 100 pack of sample blades to get a feel for stuff. I just happened to settle on a sharper, cheaper blade.

I went 38hd over 180 because it was heavier and something in my mind said 'that means it's probably better built/will last longer.' It likely isn't true. If I could go back, I would start with this one.
Anyone use a synthetic brush?

I got a 180 for Christmas and love it. Nice weight to it and for a first time user it feels like I have a lot of control.

Not bad for price. Thats the one I am looking at. big IF though if I buy one.

Looking to buy one but waiting for more feedback. I just cant see paying $100-200 + for a top end badger brush.
Want a bigger one though. I have a small entry level cheapo. Feels about as good as a paint brush on my face.
To whoever asked about brush care after shaves. Hang upside down from rack. Take them into the shower with you and wash the brush like your hair. Using same shampoo etc. It is hair you are washing so it makes sense.

I've got a question
I always let my facial hair grow out a bit then shaved it clean. Lately i've been using a stubble trimmer but never really have just kept the stubble for a long time..If I keep it there for awhile(stubble) will the hairs eventually thicken, giving the "darker" facial hair look that makes all the women's panties drop? I can grow a light beard in a week
TIA

Probably, but it would take a while because roots will keep growing and pushing black hair up, but it may take a while to get fully black

I just started shaving with a DE safety razor last week, and MY LORD it is awesome! I got the Parkour 99R long handle extra heavy razor, an assorted pack of blades, edwin jagger best badger brush (i think it was recommended here), proraso shaving cream and soap (sensitive), and proraso pre-shave (sensitive). I used some leftover grooming lounge aftershave that I've had- I highly recommend it for those who havent tried it.
It probably took me 30 minutes the first time, as I was scared to death. I have a rather thick beard and usually have trouble on my chin and neck. I was so nervous the first pass, but the razor (shark chrome) worked like a hot knife through butter. My first shave I only did with the grain and it was still closer than any cartridge i've used- and i didnt even cut myself. I have since started going across the grain with no major issues yet. However, I did have a major cut on the chin once, but no razor burn.

I think I read on the back of my green bigelow tube that it was made in Italy for co bigelow. I think they are the same....... I think.
Anyway
Mach 5
CO Bigelow
The bigelow may be pricey but a tube lasts me 6 months And I shave every day.

Happen to pick up some sharp super stainless too? I loved the chrome, but I thought the stainless were terrible. I'm curious as to whether or not I stand alone in thinking that.
