Everyone forgets his greatest accomplishment in his career.

He was a bomber pilot in WWII.

Flew B-29s.

I had the pleasure of talking about that with him one time. He was very proud of his service.

A very fine man. He will be missed. RIP Coach.

RIP

ETA: Do you think the NCAA/SEC will let the team honor him with a patch on the jersey?

I agree! Charlie Mac was another special coach at LSU. All in all we have had relatively few coaches as a football program and that is something to be said for the loyalty and commitment to LSU athletics. Only person EVER to leave b/c of quest for another challenge is you-know-who. LSU is a wonderful institution and Paul Dietzel was a true icon (and trail blazer/leader) for LSU football. Les Miles should have a statue before Nick Saban - just saying (had to get that in).

Sat next to him last year in the movie theater. I talked his arm off before the film and he didn't mind it at all....

God bless his family.

RIP Coach Dietzel.

Know he'll have a great seat next to Charlie Mac to cheer the Tigers on to victory Saturday.

There may be more to it, but I always understood the two situations to have a major difference.

Dietzel wasn't actively out shopping his services or having it done on his behalf. He was happy at LSU and respected the program, but got an offer that was too much of an honor/dream job to pass up.

I think the fact that he returned to LSU speaks volumes to how both parties felt.

Saban was always looking to leave. He never had any intention of staying at LSU till he retired. He didn't consider it the best job in the country. We were just a stepping stone. What Gump fans don't realize is he is no more loyal to them, just older and it suits him not to move.
