You consider that to be "far, far less" than this exemption? And thanks for signing your post.

re: When do the good people of the country just march on Washington?

I was thinking I would read this thread and be a little disgusted by a Congressman carping about making a good salary for - and this is eveb nire important to me than the dollar figure - a position that he chose and campaigned for. As I read the linked piece, though, I doubt he is really doing that. Instead, in a closed door meeting, he was arguing AGAINST special exemptions from Obamacare for Reps and their staffers. I agree with his position. I strongly suspect that he doesn't feel "stuck" at all and was merely making the point that even those making lower salaries in staff positions chose to be there and have the opportunity to make big bucks later. I can't say this with this certainty and I don't know precisely HOW he said this, but I suspect that most folks on this board would actually agree with his position. If Obamacare is good enough for America at large, why shouldn't it apply to Congress, as welll?

One one hand, they're supposed to be servants of the people, BUT

On the other hand, they have significant expenses in keeping up their posh lifestyles in an area with a high cost of living, BUT

On the other hand, they pass legislation detrimental to the pocketbooks of their constituents, so why shouldn't they observe "What's good for the goose is good for the gander?" BUT

On another hand, if they're subjected to the same laws as the average peon, will they be able to afford the hookers and drugs they require to do their basic jobs? How could one of our congress critters have the resources to defend themselves when they're hit with the inevitable tax evasion charges with the paltry pittance we pay them? Take Weiner for example. Let's have a show of hands from every married man on this board who hasn't texted a picture of his penis to some underaged chick who wasn't his wife? Yep, just as I thought. We're all guilty even if we didn't inhale.

Another question I'd like to ask the reich-wing conservonazis on this board is about the strange situation where you elect a congress critter so stupid that he/she/transgender/lesbian/gay/presbyterian would attempt to light a BIC lighter by scraping it against a stone? Whatcha gonna do with them? Are you so heartless that you'd underpay them for the only job for which they're qualified? You'd only be a Tea Party fringer who wants to watch the unemployment rate burn.

The inexorable argument to be made is that we need to keep paying our public servants handsomely so that they can defend themselves when they run afoul of the laws they make for the rest of us.

You're right...he was arguing against the exemption...he was just inartful...I don't understand why staffers ran off to tell on him. Do these GOP staffers want the special exemption?

Do you know what the rates were on these acts? They were less than the massive amount of "tax" we are going to pay under Obamacare, dimwit.

And you're welcome, I guess.

That's a wholly different situation and these were just 2 of many sticks on the fire...you well know this isn't similar...and the root was a lack of representation.

No time soon. We won't even vote the politicians we have out of office!

There is a reason they do not fear us. The American voter has proven to be feckless and easy to fool.

Quality argument

An exemption from a healthcare bill that was passed by elected officials is just like taxes without representation that didn't individually lead to revolution....I should have expected as much from a girl that signs her posts.

Seriously, are you going to argue that bill was properly passed? Aside from all of the problems with it that others have posted, you do remember how it was "deemed" to have been passed, do you not?

Aside from all of the contortions Democrats went through to impose Obamacare, it is a fact that the Revolution was fought over laws that had much less of a financial impact on citizens at the time.

They felt that those laws were an absolute violation of their rights to freedom and self-governance, and weren't willing to submit to them, no matter how insignificant the financial impact might have been.

Apparently citizens then had a much better grasp on what was truly important than many do now.

They get a per diem that approaches the salary and all of their benefits, they are vetted into the retirement system at about 50% of their salary after six years in office. A cruise missile would improve DC greatly.

Yes...but frankly I'm more upset by the SCt ruling. It was part of the process...and it was passed by our elected representatives.

The issue in the taxes you highlight wasn't so much the taxes as it was the manner in which the taxes were levied "NO REPRESENTATION". That's where the revolt was rooted.

quote:

They felt that those laws were an absolute violation of their rights to freedom and self-governance

Exactly, because they weren't represented...

But hey, I'm an honest person and I just now thought of an example of where people revolted due to taxation: The Whiskey Rebellion.
