I was at that game (Ole Miss) myself. Time stood still! 
I saw almost every game there from 1969 t0 1972. One of the ones I missed was the ND game where we kicked ND's a$$. We banded geese at Rockefeller Refuge all day and couldn't get into the game by the time we got back to campus
Had a ball watching on TV with the doors open so we could hear the crowd.

I saw a game as a child with no upper deck and no South End. I remember watching those big flames from Oil wells out of the south end zone. Probably around early 50's.

Everyone seems to have been in the south endzone back then.
Anyone else remember the guy who was at every game on the stretcher in the southwest corner near the feild. He supposedly had special glasses with mirrors that allowed him to see the game while laying on the stretcher.

I sat in the south upper deck for the Bert Jones to Brad Davis throw. South upper deck has been there since I was a child in the 50's.
In that era LSU faculty could buy season tickets for 4 in the upper deck for a dollar per ticket.
"The horseshoe was eliminated in 1953 by the addition of the south grandstands increasing capacity to 67,720. Unlike the existing stadium structure, they were double-decked in order to fit within the space provided."

Most of the games in the 60's and early 70's started at 8:00...but the games were usually over before 10:30. No TV or radio timeouts and the pace of the game was much quicker. If you were broadcasting the game, you had to work around the flow of the game, not like now when TV dictates when play resumes.
I recently watched the '71 Orange Bowl that we played against Nebraska on you tube. (at least I THINK it was '71) The video was shown was the real time broadcast of the game including commercials and halftime show and I was stunned that it lasted much less than 3 hours.
I do remember watching that game on TV live on New Years night. It was always such a rare event for LSU to be on TV back then, that the memories are burned in!

I'm sure that the home games were always a 7:30 p.m. start ... unless national or regional tv was involved.
One of the most unusual start times I can remember was the Thanksgiving night (1973) game against Alabama ... a 5:45 p.m. start.

Saw LSU beat Colorado 42-14 in the early 70's. My uncle brought me for my 13th birthday, I've been a Tiger fan ever since. And yes, we sat right smack dab in the middle of the north endzone, halfway up, no upper deck. He still regrets giving up those season tickets.

Technically, I guess the south end zone has an upper deck. Does anyone know its history? Was it built as an upper deck whenever the south end was enclosed, and if so, why was it built as two levels rather than one, ala the north end zone? When was the south end zone built?

Originally, kickoff times were 8:00 pm. Later, not sure when, they moved kickoff up to 7:30 pm. There were very few day games.
Another thing about the old stadium configuration and the 8:00 pm kickoffs was the sweet smell of bourbon. I think bourbon was the drink of choice back then and people smuggled it in by the pints and fifths. When you entered the lower bowl, it was so strong and you couldn,t miis it.
