Problems with the link. Here's another try but if it doesn't work you can google tbo.com Craft Brewers Clash with Big Beer Lobby

That's cool. At least it's a start. Interesting version going on in Florida. Apparently AB got an ammendment passed back in the 60s so they could sell beer at their Tampa brewery. Now their brewery is gone and they don't like the ammendment because it helps the craft brewers.

How are they getting around the regulations? Or did I misunderstand the rules? I thought only brew pubs could sell their beer on site and if they do they are prohibited from distributing it elsewhere. I guess NOLA could have a brew system dedicated to the tasting room and none of that beer would go anywhere else. That might be a loop hole. I'd also heard someone was trying for legislation to ease up the rules a little. Maybe something happened and I missed it.

Can you expound on 'doing your own leg work'? So you pick the brands you'll sell and don't just go with the distributor recommendations. What do you base your choice on? previous sales? word of mouth? any kind of marketing research? The distributors put money into the research but it doesn't seem like anyone trusts them to give the straight scoop, they just try to talk you into what benefits them. Well, not everyone thinks that way. One microbrewery rep told me the AB Inbev distributors he works with in the south are a classy group.

Then what's the point of a brewery having a salesman? It seems rather convoluted to go to a retailer and ask them to call someone else to order the beer. And since microbreweries are relatively insignificant to distributors it's difficult to believe the distributor would put such a request on high priority. Does a microbrewery salesman really have much effect?

I'm interested in distribution, sales, and microbrewing in LA so wanted to see if this thread can gain some new life. I'm wondering who does most of the selling in the three tier system. It seems the distributor has the control of sales but a microbrewer will need to promote his product to get customers to request the brew from the distributor. How does it work? Can the brewery 'promoter' provide samples to a bar or restaurant? Can these be sold? Or must all of this go through the distributor?

I'm also wondering if it's just beer that is under this system. I know I can go to a winery and buy a case of their wine. Why can't I do the same at a brewery?

Trying to understand the system.
