Here is a theory I heard from my brother yesterday. He thinks that SB has a Div. III football team. That = no scholarships. The limits on baseball scholarships were generated by Title IX issues to compensate for 85 male football players with no balance to females since they don't have football teams.

So, if SB doesn't give scholarships for football, they are excused from the baseball limit as long as it equals the number of softball scholarships to girls.

Don't know if this is the case, but I do know that the military academies are not limited in football because their scholarships are not for football. IE, Navy can dress out 200 football players even though they are all on full scholarships.

Nah, we have division 1aa football and either way the scholarships limits are the same no matter what. Stony Brook has been one of the best northeast baseball schools for a couple years now. Stony Brook tuition is also about as reasonable as you can find anywhere in the country which is a huge + in a limited scholarship sport like baseball. I said it yesterday in another thread, but we have kids on our roster who have turned down acc schools to come to Stony Brook.

I'm not trying to be a dick but that kid wouldn't be a Top 15 pitcher in the SEC.

He might make a very nice 3rd starter for a team, but we shouldn't have struggled as much as we did against him, considering the talent we saw throughout the SEC season.

I don't doubt any of this. I just think some people are focusing on hte fact that he doesn't have plus pitches, and are ignoring the fact that if you locate your pitches well, which Vanderka did throughout most of the night, you can be successful regardless.
I think Vanderka is better than some of you are giving him credit for. Heck he threw a no hitter last year.

Yes, and their conference doesn't play Friday night games. They played double headers every weekend. I am guessing they'll get some more $$ for the baseball program soon. Maybe lights and a few more seats.

Joe Nathan field was completed a little more than a year ago, but it's still very much a work in progress. I'm hoping the exposure of this weekend will bring in enough donation money to start making some of upgrades.

thanks for the info...I thought for sure i heard total budget...If true that a decent mid major budget..Do they play football?

Yeah they play FCS football. They recently changed conferences so they could full scholarship and finished last year 16th in FCS. Iowa's Marcus Coker transferred to Stony Brook in the spring and we think we are serious FCS national title contenders in 2012.

Im not sure what other sports they play ,but i heard they have a $850,000 athletic budget..They are sure getting a bang for their buck

That's probably the baseball team's budget. Stony Brook's athletic department has a pretty respectable mid major budget at 18-20 millions dollars.

Most of their players are from new York. Guess the players wanted to stay closer to home. Why would a player from around here sign with a school 2000 miles away if get offered in state?

This is part of it as well. Our freshman DH turned down Clemson to come to Stony Brook as unlikely as that may seem.
It's really about player development. Two of Stony Brook's draft picks, Jankowski and Campbell, came to Stony Brook with a ton of talent but were very raw. Jankowski had several football scholarships coming out of high school but decided on baseball and Stony Brook was the only school to offer him a baseball scholarship. Campbell tried out for the baseball team as a junior in high school. That summer at showcases he was throwing 89-90 and Stony Brook took a chance on him.

Buffalo ? You kid right ?

Binghamton is by far the best SUNY school in the state.

And this is coming from someone who visited all these schools before deciding on LSU and also knew several kids who went to Binghamton, SB, Albany and Buffalo

As a Stony Brook alum it's hard to say this, but if I were to say theres one SUNY flagship it's Buffalo. Buffalo has the largest enrollment and with Stony Brook receives the lions share of funding. Binghamton is more selective in undergraduate admissions because of its smaller enrollment, but it pales in comparison to Buffalo and Stony Brook as a research university (publications, citations, distinguished faculty, etc.)

There are four research universities in the SUNY system: Stony Brook, Buffalo, Binghamton, and Albany. Stony Brook and Buffalo are members of the AAU. What school does your girlfriend consider the flagship SUNY?

It has to be more than just a coincidence that Stoney Brook has more high draft picks than most major baseball powers.

Something just seems strange that this many really good baseball players would just all end up at a small div 1 school in Rhode Island.

Stony Brook is a flagship state university of New York with 25k students located 60 minutes outside Manhattan. We've only been division 1 for about 10 years and we've only just started to make serious investments in athletics, but I fully expect SBU to become a major player.
