I think Todd Golden is an interesting case. He won a national title last year, but other than that he's never made it past the first weekend in the NCAA tournament. He had a really good team last year, obviously, that won the SEC tournament and a good team this year. But, again, other than the national championship season, he's not done that much. You can't just ignore that though, but I am interested to see how well Florida does over the next couple of years.

I want to see Golden after all these bigs leave. He gets the credit for recruiting them obviously, but I doubt he'll be able to keep up this level of size/athleticism/depth in the frontcourt like he has had.

We've won 25+ games and 2+ tournament games 5 of his 7 seasons, including the last 4 in a row. The only coach I'd trade him for is Hurley. That kind of consistency is extremely rare.

Yeah, this is where I'm at (even though Hurley is an arse I'd have to wear my thickest crimson shades to get behind). I'd have Sampson ahead of him currently but he has to be close to retiring and Oats has a lot of potential considering his age, rapid rise, and I'd argue the best offensive system in college basketball.

If we are going to definitively say he's not top 3, can we please start listing your 3 current best coaches?

And again, we're not talking about best career here, but strictly looking at the best current coach.

Hurley is definitely at 1 and it would be hard to argue for anyone other than Sampson at 2 given him posting top 5 KenPom teams for 6 consecutive years. Oats is definitely in the next group of coaches for that 3rd spot and would probably be where I'd lean though there are other coaches that could have arguments.

The possibility of Michigan then Iowa State in the second weekend is about as bad as we could draw without catching Florida and Purdue as second weekend options lol.

Michigan hasn't been what they were for over a month now. They're still VERY good, but I'd rather play Michigan than any of the other 3. As for Iowa State, I view the 2-seeds as pretty even. I would have preferred Houston because for some reason we do well against them (despite them use the same "can't call everything" philosophy that we suck against), but I think Iowa State is a better matchup for us than the other 2.

they were probably 2 or 3 with toppin. those last 3 losses were against tourney teams and beating duke and zona goes a long way.

Not a chance for a 2-seed and they would have had to improve the team they were at that point to get to a 3-seed. They were the 16th ranked team when Toppin went down already with 7 losses at that point. For example, Purdue squeaked in to the last 2-seed slot with just 8 losses on a harder SOS. They would have had to run the table the rest of the year.

This doesn't mean they'll be easy (we lost to Ole Miss...). Just that it was a favorable draw for multiple reasons.
Texas Tech without Toppin whose team was a 4/5-seed with him is pretty favorable IMO. They also lost their last 3 (2 of which were unranked and the last getting pounded by Iowa State). They are also outside the top 80 in rebounding percentage (and that includes 26 of their 32 games with the 11 RPG injured star).
Our bracket turned out very favorable. Florida is clearly the weakest 1-seed resume wise, but they are our kryptonite and the worst matchup for us. Michigan has shown the highest ceiling of the top 3 teams, but they are also the most likely of the bunch to play down to their competition and haven't had a truly dominant win in over a month (with 2 losses and a lot of really close wins). Texas Tech is also a team that is playing without their first-team All-American. I actually picked Akron to beat them (which would absolutely drive little bro crazy).

Davis has some family connection to Hofstra which he mentioned on the show, I think he was throwing them a bone.

Davis also has a vendetta against Alabama after the Bediako situation. Dude has a whole article based on the incorrect notion that a bylaw allows for paid foreign professionals. After I pointed it out under a tweet of his correctly explaining how the bylaw does not allow room for contracted professionals, he responded "That's incorrect" and refused to explain any further. Dude is a face without a brain.

Big Ben Simmons vibes for me.

Are you thinking of someone else? Simmons played all 33 of LSU's games and averaged 35 minutes per game. He also was a terrible shooting prospect whose refusal to even attempt shooting the ball buried his NBA career.

Was never an issue in HS and was considered the ultimate competitor at that level. I won't deny that the college experience has been weird, but there's been a number of guys recently who quit on their college team early to prioritize the NBA draft where it ended up being a nothing burger at the next level. It's annoying to watch as a college fan (and is another reason why I'd love for the NBA to nix the one and done rule), but at the same time he could have shut it down entirely after the first stint and would have been a lock to go top 3. He clearly wants to play to a certain extent and looking at his HS tape you can definitely see that something is affecting his athletic burst. To me, it seems he has some type of nagging injury, but instead of playing through it, he nurses it because he's focused on his draft stock instead of collegiate success.

I can't imagine being an NBA gm or owner and making Peterson a top pick. He has basically put every possible red flag out there that he is either a head case or he will straight up quit on his teammates.

This is how the Jalen Johnsons of the world get taken far too late in the draft. If I were a GM there's only 3 true red flags I'd look for: off the court behavior issues, work ethic issues, and medical problems. According to the knowledge available, the first 2 are emphatically checked. He's been described as a gym rat throughout HS and even college to the point it reminds me of the way folks talked about Sexton. If his medicals are fine, I think you have to take him top 3. The separation between those top 3 and the rest is too significant to let another guy who prioritized the next level (as weird as it may have been) slip.

He's a Kings draft pick all the way.

Honestly, the more likely scenario is that the Kings pick 3rd, they decide to go with someone else because of the red flags with Peterson on the board and Peterson becomes a GOAT contender.

This is Ben Eblen erasure.

I don't know man. Eblen was an offensive liability for sure, but he was at least a solid defender that didn't go into immediate epileptic shock the moment the ball approached his vicinity.

As a post player in an elite offensive system, Noah's FG% this season is 10 percentage points lower than Eblen's career average as a part of one of the worst offensive systems in CBB. And as a post player who rarely gets passed the ball because of this track record, his turnover averages are currently higher than Eblen's career as a back up PG at Alabama.
Had to let that one simmer...

Catchings played out of his mind. Amari Allen looked like he was playing through the flu out there. Easily his worst game in Crimson. And it's a good thing we had Bol Bowen and Jemison to come in and pick up his slack on an off-night. Seriously though, having our 3 energy forwards (Allen, Bol Bowen, and Jemison) combine for 2/14 and 5 rebounds in 47 minutes is what lost us this game.

Also shout out to Williamson whose only stats in 9 minutes was a TO and a foul. The secondhand embarrassment is real, and I genuinely feel so bad for him. It may have been Patriot League, but there's no way their player of the year should become by far the worst high-major player I've seen get minutes. Never seen a player struggle this bad mentally with a jump in competition.

Also, as a side note, the officials absolutely can not allow that kind of delay to happen. What an absolute shite show. There was basically a 2nd halftime break. Took them far too long to decide what the commentator mentioned at the very beginning of the delay was the play (voiced shot clock). Fortunately, these 2 teams play a similar style, but that kind of delay is game-breaking for teams that rely on pace of play to wear down opponents. Not to mention, it destroys any and all momentum and flow of the game.

I said it earlier this week that we just don’t match up with them. It’s like us vs MSU. We are always going to get our arse kicked by Tenneseee w/ very rare exception.

I don't disagree for this season, but recent history suggests this has been one of the more tighter matchups in CBB since Oats took over. They've won 5 straight but they've been mostly tightly contested games in the Oats era.

The problem is when we get this type of relaxed whistle, we have to significantly outplay them because Tennessee will take full advantage of it.

And even if they call it tight, Barnes rides them on foul differential despite him knowing his team fouls significantly more. I honestly would love to see Oats go with this approach defensively. It allows your bad defender to be passable and officials tend to focus on that number far too much.
quote:

This is not on the officials. We have a soft team full of soft players. We’re watching them grab rebounds over us.

It can be both ways: we are playing soft. Tennessee is also being allowed to hold and hand check our guards into oblivion. You are not supposed to be able to use your arms to prevent an offensive player from driving past you. Not sure we've had a possession where this hasn't happened multiple times.

The boards problem is us absolutely getting outworked. Offensively, we are not being given freedom of movement which absolutely cripples our offense.
I don't know how it happens, but everytime we play Tennessee in Knoxville the officials have the exact whistle that significantly favors Tennessee's brand of basketball.
I think most would think Arkansas shot well from midrange. By my count they shot 23 of them and hit 10. That's definitely better than average at 43% but it still equates to shooting 28% from 3 (an indisputable poor shooting night by any measure). This efficiency is dulled even further when considering the horrible FT rate that comes from taking those shots. It can sometimes be frustrating when we allow an open midrange shot and they hit it, but even with a top NBA level guard prospect who is known best for his shooting having arguably the best single game in CBB this season, Arkansas as a team still proved that midrange shots aren't efficient.
As a Hawks fan and NBA draft nerd, I'd be stoked to get Philon at 21. Absurd that seems to be his new range in mock drafts.
What is everyone's thoughts on playing him against Tennessee? I'm torn between waiting it out and playing him right away. NCAA can't penalize us for playing him, but at the same time I feel confident that it would negatively impact NCAAT seeding (probably beyond just a loss) if Bediako isn't deemed eligible for the rest of the season. On the other hand, it would be nice to get him incorporated into the lineup ASAP if he were to be eligible the rest of the year.
