OH NO! Could it be that JJ and Manieri are the same person?
Don't go there. JJ is still blaming everyone except the man in the mirror, and taking credit for any job well done (when it was).
Mainieri took the blame publicly more than once, for weeks and weeks. He still does.

Warren Morris. I really don't have to explain.
You got that right.
I'd add Furniss and Mahtook for the many years of outstanding plays/hits and their superb attitude and the way they (and Morris) always represented LSU to the best of their abilities.
That's three young men of whom every Tiger can be very proud: Morris, Furniss, and Mahtook.

The only thing I'd change is the rule that eliminates LSU playing one team from the East for a two year run. Not playing SC this year hurt the Tigers' rpi, and we know that hurt their getting into the tournament, right? :rotflmao:

see 3 freshman pitchers who if they all develop in their 2nd year at an average pace will give us probably the best rotation in the conference if not the country. This team underperformed...but it was young.
Agree on the 3 Frosh Starters; but only IF Grewe leaves 'em alone. Don't know who else to blame for Ott's getting worse instead of better. Grewe IS the pitching coach and he calls the pitches, so who else do we blame if not him? (excpet PM if he doesn't get rid of him)
Rittiner should be back. He was looking better and better throughout 2010. Middle relievers can be made on this team. It's closing pitching I'm worried about.
Agreed on the theory of waiting too long to switch pitchers. Switch every danged batter if that's what it takes.
The team was young, but there are a lot of young teams in the NCAA field that was named today.
This team as so close so many times. So close. IF they learn to turn that into a "no mercy" mindset on the field in 2012, they will once again be in contention for a NCAA title.

rely on jones, rhymes, and katz at the plate. hanover needs to be more consistent, though we've been saying that. ross needs to take a big step forward. i guess we'll see about the new guys.
Don't forget Katz. He's improved even with Sanchez as the batting coach.
Hope Ross goes wherever Katz has been going for summer ball. He was a great hitter in high school; here's hoping he shows up in the fall ready to be a great SEC hitter.
Lowery looked awesome the few times he got a bat in his hands. Doesn't hurt to think he'll be a greater contributor next year.
J. Jones will be at home in CF and that just might make him even better (relaxed) at the plate.
Rhymes should improve could become the hitter with the highest BA on the team, easily.
Hope Hanover will be back b/c they need a truly good third baseman. The hot spot is a hard one to cover.

Grewe and Sanchez still need to go, and soon.
LSU also beat MSU, there, two out of three.
In the past NCAA has also considered one run losses in picking one team over another. IT did not consider anything, according to Weiser, except for the wins against the low-place LSU teams and not playing OOC games on the road.
I think the NCAA should do away with the rpi, or at least with their official rpi. It has no meaning whatsoever.

This is not on the NCAA or the selection committee. If you can't see that there are issues with the team, then you haven't been going to the games.
Actually it IS on the NCAA. You had to dig to find reasons that sounded viable. Bottom line, the criteria applied to LSU was not applied to other "lesser" teams. Of the top 40 offical NCAA rpi, only three times got left out: LSU at 24, and E. Tenn. and Elon (both in the upper thirties). LSU plays in the toughest conference in baseball. The NCAA gives five, count them, FIVE regionals to ACC teams. Yes, LSU lost three games, just as CPM said, that cost them the tournament, a higher ranking in the west, and inevitably, the NCAA. Teams that don't make their own conference are often in the NCAA. It has happened many times. Don't tell me that LSU does not rank in the top 64 and then give some BS reason like not enough road games that were tough. SEC games are tough road games. They gave as one reason the low ranking of the SEC teams with whom LSU won series. One of those teams, Miss State, made the cut. Somehow that doesn't wash. And they gave LSU no credit for beating their top 8 seed CSF, just b/c the game was not played in Fullerton. ???? Oh well, how long 'til February?

Sending Rhymes around w/ 2 outs and a blistering hot Mahtook due up was bad enough...but how in the frick do you attempt to send Watkins from 1st to 3rd on an infield hit w/ 2 outs and both Katz AND Mahtook due up? say what?! that didnt really happen did it? i missed the game...
In Saturday's Advocate, Mainieri was quoted as saying that Watkins' attempt to make it to third was a "stupid" move. He did not say if it was Sanchez's stupid move or Watkins'. But it did happen and it was worse than stupid. Way worse.
Improving Hitting
Posted by marmur4647 on 5/22/11 at 1:45 pm
Mahtook is a natural. He did not need coaching.
Not so sure that is true for the rest of the Tigers. Sanchez is the hitting coach. After about three weeks in a slump, he does some one on one with Watkins. Trey did better afterwards at not striking out, but still had some problems with good SEC pitching.
What bothered me most? In the middle of the team slumping, batters were coming up to bat and leaving the bat on their shoulders until after the pitcher had released the ball. This puts a lot less force in the bat coming around to hit the ball. It seemed this went on for two or three games before the strange phenomenon disappeared, for the most part, from the batters box.
I really do believe a more seasoned, proven hitting coach could help this team. Same for pitching coach. Head coaches are more like CEO's and personnell evaluators. It's those assistants and volunteers who work with the players individually who should be improving players once they are at LSU.

We have some pitchers that will be able to contribute next year. I don't think Grewe is the coach we need to develop these guys, so that is our first need. Pitchers coming up: Jimmy Dykstra, Ryan Eades, Forrest Garrett, Randal Meyer, Coklin Nguyen, Michael Reed, Nick Rumelow.
If he doesn't go to MLB, next year's pitchers will include Nola's younger brother, an outstanding high school pitcher at Catholic HS in BR.
Dykstra has couple of really nice pitches for a reliever. Garrett, Rumbelow and Chris Cotton (what happened to him? he just disappeared) all showed promise. You have to believe a top pitching coach would improve these guys. Thinking positively, it seems like LSU's pitching might just be in good shape next year.

And another thing, count me in as a big Matty Ott supporter. He has had some rough spells, and it has cost LSU some games, but I'm pulling for the guy every time he gets the ball in his hands. The closer role in baseball takes alot of guts!!!
I am also a big Ott supporter. Whatever happened around mid-season last year (there were a lot of rumors), Ott pitched great in the SEC Tournament, and he had a very good summer. He returns to LSU looking pretty good. Then, it starts looking like 2010 all over again.
Could be wrong, but that speaks: Pitching coach problems to me!
re: Mike lowery...pretty gutsy saving him for last game
Posted by marmur4647 on 5/22/11 at 1:25 pm to GeismarGeauxer
Seriously, he had practically "won" a spot at first base when he pulled a hamstring in pre-game practice. Then we heard, when he got a little better, he'd only be used to pinch hit. Which was pretty much the case b/f this weekend.
Lowery as a regular might prove to be another Mason Katz success story. I'd love to see him get the chance as a senior in 2012.

I have to wonder what kind of attitude the guys will have tomorrow.
They were so flat that second day in Alabama. And they had won the night before.
They've fought through a very tough season and stuck together through it all.
I'm hoping they'll come out and play like they are capable of (Friday night)

These are my top five baseball players for the year, and I say Kudos to them. They never gave up and they always gave it their all.
Also congrats to Raph Rhymes and Jacoby Jones on good first seasons at LSU.
This a great core group. Now, if we can get the coaching and those intangibles we don't know about turned around, maybe next baseball season will be what we thought this one was gonna be!

And BTW, Alsup twice, in interviews b/f the season this year, credited his summer coach with helping him to become a much better pitcher. He added that Coach G. had helped too, but I got the impression it was more his summer league coach who helped him become the better Ben Alsup.

I'll probably catch all kinds of grief for saying this, but I think both Grewe and Sanchez need to go: and my reasoning goes to the lack of improvement by hitters, base runners, and pitchers. Gausman, McCune, Eades, and Ott eepecially deserve the best pitching coach LSU can hire and Mainieri can find. The first three b/c they are outstanding frehsmen; Ott b/c he is an outstanding talent who has been left to sway in the wind it seems, when he needs lots of help in becoming the Mattie Ott of his freshman year.
We also need to recruit in Louisiana some, but we also need to recruit outside of the state. We can't recruit at 1-A and 2-A schools and expect to find many SEC type players.
