Three QB System...

Posted by F Buras on 9/12/10 at 8:51 am

I would like to propose a revolutionary idea to our current QB dilemma. I have been a lurker for the past 2 years here and have not noticed anyone advance a two QB theory. Now on the front end of our ’10 season let me throw it out there and even expand on it.

I became an LSU fan during the Cholly Mac 2 QB systems and wasn’t impressed with the concept then. However I understood the need to develop a 2nd or 3rd QB should we have an injury to that key role position. I still feel it was a big injustice to guys like Bert Jones and David Woodley.

We have in our arsenal 3 unique talents from which to dial up for any given game situation. Each of our top 3 QB’s brings a different level of “good” (and bad) qualities to the playing field.

JJ pros and cons:
Running ability, not excellent but much better than the alternative, JL (option 2). Rollouts tend to disrupt a defense with moving mismatches. If the O-line is getting pressure use JJ and this strategy. Moving pockets can open up screens and passing lanes that JJ and RS (QB option 3) are more likely to take advantage of.

JJ plays way to tentative for to long in games. I saw him in several games last year waste half a game before he gathered the pieces to the puzzle and took command. I know the fear of not making a mistake (aka pick-6) can be paralyzing but a good QB will take calculated risks and work through the fog of battle. You have to gather your wits and know what the defense is giving you in a relatively short period of time (hello is that OC awake up there, we need some help here).

I don’t feel JJ reads routes as they develop well enough. At this stage in his development he should be able to anticipate the moves of his top 3 or 4 receivers. Trust and timing of routes will be paramount this year like no other so far in his career.

The coaching staff has said there is vast improvement in Jefferson through the spring and summer but we have been misled before with this inside info. I didn’t see it in the spring game and that scares me. Now after two games I’m still not seeing it in our #1 QB.

I don’t like his accuracy on deep balls. He lacks touch on some of his throws. I don’t notice the finesse of putting air under certain throws so as to drop them in over a d-backs reach. The pick in the Vandy game showed that flaw. His receivers (in my opinion are the best group in the nation) are gifted with talent, height and speed that he should be able to exploit at this point in his development.

He has not shown me that he is capable of going thru the progressions (looking at a short route, then an intermediate and then a deep receiver) that a quality QB has to nail down as in second nature. I do realize our O-line play last year was not giving him time in the pocket. The ’10 O-line looks better and is giving him more time and I do see some improvemsnt. I just do not observe him looking off covered receivers and going to secondary choices consistently.

I remember watching Archie Manning as a college QB. ”Back in the day” his O-line was porous. His receivers had prearranged secondary routes when his pocket collapsed and he was flushed out. Manning was a master at scrambling and getting the completions.

JL - QB option 2:
It was very unfortunate that he was forced into battle as a young freshman. Thrown into the breech, he slipped, slid and made many freshman mistakes but I like JL. He is a gutsy Texas gunslinger that is accurate most of the time. Also unfortunately he has a knack for getting picked. He had a habit of locking onto a receiver too long waiting for that break or separation to exploit. Good D-backs follow the QB’s eyes and will move into passing lanes. Has he overcome this deficiency? He needs some reps to evaluate this guy in game situations.

Lack of mobility is a big drawback in this league especially with the speed and caliber of defensive athletes in the SEC. I like that he has trimmed his weight coming back lighter and hopefully has added some footwork after 2 yrs of OJT. Are you taking dance and karate classes? I’m being serious here, you want to overcome weaknesses or what! We need quality backups and if you want to salvage that shaky career start JL!

He looks over the choices (progressions) better than JJ and given time usually can make the good choice. His completion vs Vandy was a high percentage shot that was perfect, we need to see more.

This kid has velocity and touch on the ball and can throw deep with accuracy. When he steps into a throw it is a piece of art. I know the JL bashers will stomp on this one…

JL has a quicker release than JJ. JJ winds up like a pitcher throwing a slider. JJ’s mechanics suck. A key ingredient for prime time NFL QB is having a quick release.

Please JL, if you feel that you are throwing off your back foot, aim for the 10th row. And under NO circumstances are you to throw into the flats w/i your 25 yard line period! In fact no passing plays inside your 20 yard line, GC are you taking notes?

If you are inside your opponent’s 30 yard line with the clock ticking down and your team is losing to Ole Piss, get conservative and don’t throw! Run 3 times and kick the game winner. I thought I was being transported back to that Aubarn game with Jamie what’s his name, who threw 3 pick sixes late in the game to snatch a defeat from the jaws of victory. A coach should have been fired that day.

RS (and develop SW for the future with reps in practice) QB option 3:
Can you imagine a defensive coordinators headaches having to game plan for all three QB’s differing styles. I know, not enough time in a game to get all three options in with any quality reps. We haven’t seen all RS’s tangibles yet but get this guy in open space or better yet have him complete a pass or two and opposing defenses will have a Wild Tiger on their hands.

Last season we watched JJ on several occasions direct our offense with several 3 and outs back to back. We saw it in the Vandy and NC games, little offensive production for entire quarters. This is demoralizing for an offense and tiring for a defense.

Game plan strategy:
If you go 3 and out - we see a new QB. Sit on the bench or grab a clipboard and observe for a few. Gain a new perspective. You throw a pick and you take a seat. Certainly if you’ve got the hot hand don’t make a change.

By the LaTech game last year JL had little game experience (20 plays) in the season. That pissed me off. We’re seeing it again this year? GC/LM in my opinion had no confidence in JL or were afraid of the crowd’s reaction (booing our guys has no place in this arena if you are a Tiger fan). JL needed to have reps in some of those early games. IMHO we would have seen better productivity and not a head case in that LaTech game. Wasn't every phase of that game awful not just the QB play?

We need to develop quality back-ups at the QB position if we intend to finish strong this season.

I just had to get that off my chest. Flame away on the newb…
:usa:
I thought the same thing last year. I'm not seeing the progress in his development.

We should have seen Lee in on several possessions after a couple of 3 and outs in the second half. Last year we saw Lee very little until JJ went down with an injury. Then he was a basket case, he should have been brought along with reps in each early game.

Maybe Shep at QB would have been interesting as as our offense struggled in that second half.
