re: 2014/2015 Winter Transfer Thread

No discredit to new manager Thomas Schaaf and all that he was able to accomplish with Werder Bremen, but, unless someone miraculously falls into their lap, I think Eintracht Frankfurt are going to struggle to stay in the Bundesliga next season. Granted, I know that we had several of our best players miss time do to injuries (what team doesn't have that problem), but we only managed to finish a pedestrian 14th. We already lost Rode to that Bavarian Juggernaut. And we just lost our Captain (Sweggler) to Hoffenheim and recently capped Sebastian Jung to Wolfsburg. All of these coming on free transfers. I still believe we have one of the best young keepers in the Bundesliga (Kevin Trapp), but he can't stop opposing clubs all by himself. With the limited budget and lack of quality players in the academy, I just don't see us bringing in enough talent to stay competitive.
Los Indios!
Kinda bummed that we have an all La Liga finale, but I think it should be a good match.
I know that Atletico have done fairly well over the last few years, but I would like to see them (or really any team for that matter) pose a constant threat to the top two in La Liga.
I don't think having only a handful of teams (or in this case, only a couple) that are the only ones that have a legitimate shot at the title year in and year out necessarily ruins a league as some might suggest. But it is nice to see an "outsider" threaten the establishment every now and then.

But what does it mean?!

Freese to bench, Carp to 3rd is my guess, Freese is sucking arse.

Wong will get some playing time, but I doubt it will be more than a bench role this season. I honestly don't see them getting rid of Freese. Even though he hasn't been playing that well, he's the hometown playoff hero.

Unless Wong just beats the cover off the ball in spring training, I don't think he'll stick around long. He's to valuable as trade bait.

Coming back from injury, he played in a friendly last Sunday and scored 2 goals in 20-30 minutes

Oh wow, yeah he's a good talent.

Dortmund is pretty damn good; don't write them off, no matter how douchey their fans are.

I think they've improved, and I think they will be FCB's closest challengers, and I think the spread might be closer than it was last season, but I don't think BVB has enough to take the title.

It's not even really an attacking midfielder position but just not as a lone defensive midfielder.

Gotcha. Either way, I don't think it won't be a huge problem. I think any kinks will be worked out by the 5th-7th match.

I wonder if Mario Goetze will make the roster this weekend.

Good question. Is he injured still? Or is he having trouble adjusting to the system?

We'll see. I think this season is going to be crazy.

Maybe. It's too early to tell. But I don't really think anyone else improved enough to challenge FCB for an entire season.

Yeah, that's what is really holding us back.

I'm not saying that's the only reason. I meant that in reference to our perceived lack of a soccer culture. In most countries (but not all) soccer is the biggest sport. Every kid dreams of playing for their national side in the WC. In our country, it's only the 5th or 6th most popular sport.
I'm saying we are perceived as not having our priorities straight.
I'm not saying that's the primary reason, I'm just saying it adds to it.

Javi Martinez as the defensive midfielder, allowing Schweinsteiger to push forward.

@HH
I don't think moving Schweinsteiger up to an offensive mid is necessarily a bad thing. I think Javi will do fine in the defensive mid role.

As much as I hate FC Hollywood, I still think they are the class of Europe. They were obviously head and shoulders above everyone last year, and I think they improved more than anyone else so far in the transfer window.

Now, it's still early, so I'm not saying all of that talent will result in another treble, but it would be a waste of talent if they don't.

I know this is some wishful thinking, but I sure would love to see my Eagles pull out a W (heck, I'll take a draw) against them this weekend.

First of all, even though soccer is popular at the elementary school level, it's nowhere near one of our countries most popular sports. Most of our best athletes either play football or basketball, and depending on what part of the country you live in, baseball or hockey.
Added to that, of the few Americans that get opportunities to play in the top leagues abroad, only a few of them have been able to compete at that level.
People from other countries already look down on us because we call it soccer, instead of football. So, what I've said above just adds to that stigma.
I'm not saying Howard's one of the best keepers in the world, but he is a pretty strong keeper, and certainly one of the best in the EPL. Everybody likes to talk about Donovan, but USMNT wouldn't be anywhere without Howard.

Yeah... I wasn't real clear on that. Sorry. I like Everton as well, I was just pointing it out since this is a Tigers blog. I figured some people out there would like to know (not necessarily you personally).

Exactly. Man, I would be honored to be put in a video game. I don't care if they gave me the worst overall rating ever. They could use my name & everything.

None of these guys would be complaining if they were doing big things in the NFL.
Unfortunately for Devery, it doesn't look like the Chargers are gonna do much of anything this year.

Belgium is loaded. You forgot the Spurs trio of Dembele, Vertonghen, and Chadli.

I did. SMH... I was just going off the top of my head. I think they are gonna be a tough out. (Of course, I've said that about the LSU Baseball team, and we've seen how that's worked out the past two years...) But they definitely have the talent to compete.
I think more than likely Brazil or Argentina will take it, but we'll see.
I think they have a better chance than any other year I can think of, but I doubt it.
I think more than likely, one of the big guys (Spain, Argentina, Brazil, Germany, France, or Italy) will win it. I think the Netherlands and Portugal are pretty close to that top group as well. My dark horse candidate is Belgium. Kompany & Van Buyten anchoring the defenders, the Everton boys Fellaini & Mirallas. Plus Witsel & Lukaku... I think they've got a pretty strong team.

@Tweezy
If you wouldn't mind, I know they're a smallerish club (but goin to Europe!) Eintracht Frankfurt.

And I don't know if anyone has asked already, but Everton (Jacob Hester's favorite club) too please.

re: Herbstreit and ESPN love LSU

I think Herbie has warmed up to us over the past few years. Outside of him & Crazy Corso, I wouldn't say ESPN loves LSU. In fact, I would say that ESPN (and really most of the media as a whole, including the CBS crew) strongly dislike LSU, or at the very least give them less credit than they deserve. Let's not forget the whole "well USC are National Champions too" fiasco from 10 years ago. In fact, back then, the only person I heard on ESPN sticking up for LSU as the sole National Champs was Nawlins boy Michael Smith.

Thanks for the assist deSandman
Man, I was stoked when the Skins picked him up this offseason. I thought he would be a great deep threat for RGIII. If they cut him and keep Stallworth, I'm gonna be madder than ....
I never liked Stallworth. I remember from his Saints days, he would make a few (and far between) incredible plays, and drop all the easy passes.
I too hope someone picks Henderson up. I'll always have love for Mr. Bluegrass Miracle.

Yeah, read it in some book about college football stadiums. I haven't seen it mentioned on the LSU Sports website or anything like that. I figure as much emphasis we've put on defense the past few years, they would want to capitalize on that tradition.
