You might want to try this first
I also just got the red ring and mine was also out of the warranty. Instead of just giving in I sat on the phone for 15 minutes telling them how much crap this was and that all of the xbox systems made have this wrong with them. After yelling at this poor indian guy for fifteen minutes they transfered me and set me up with a new warranty and are fixing my console for free.
