As far as my research shows, Marcus Thornton averaged more points per game than any rookie second-round NBA pick in at least the last 25 years. Anyone who watched him at LSU last year could have told NBA scouts they were wrong to doubt his scoring ability.

LSU No. 4 on my ballot, but not for long

Posted by gsmith on 10/6/09 at 6:48 pm
I have LSU as a shaky No. 4 on my Examiner.com ballot, but the Tigers won't be No. 4 next week. They'll either use the momentum from the exciting finish against Georgia, play their best game of the year against Florida and move up, or they'll continue to struggle in almost every department, lose and start their descent.

It really doesn't matter how they played in the first five games anymore. They're 5-0, and the heart of the schedule is ahead of them.

My full take: LSU vs. Florida

Am I being too harsh? Will the Tigers beat the Gators for the third time in a row in Baton Rouge?

I vote in the Examiner.com top 25 poll, and it's incredibly difficult to find any team worthy of the top 10 after the top three.

I put LSU No. 5 even though the Tigers' statistics are awful pretty much across the board. The one exception is turnover margin, where LSU excels, and as we know from last year, turnovers are probably the most significant stat in determining games.

We'll find out this Saturday whether LSU is overrated.

Why LSU is No. 6 on my ballot

LSU has not looked like a top-10 team in its first three games, but that's true for almost every team in the country. I rated the Tigers sixth in the latest Examiner.com top 25 poll because I can't find another team that deserves to be ahead of them.

Check out my rationale and see the whole top 25 here.

LSU deserves to be No. 6

LSU No. 8 on my ballot

I put the Tigers No. 8 on my latest ballot in the Examiner.com top 25.

It's hard to put them that high after the first two games, but the question is who would deserve to be ahead of them. Outside of the top four, it's pure guesswork this early in the season and no one has been particularly impressive.

Would Boise State beat LSU? California? Ohio State? Not in my book.

LSU No. 10 on my ballot

I ranked LSU No. 10 in the inaugural Examiner.com top 25 poll, which will be updated every week.

If Jordan Jefferson is as good as many observers say he is, my initial ranking is too low, but it won't take long for the Tigers to move up if they win their first four games.

Nothing earth shattering here, but I look at LSU's continued dominance of Louisiana recruiting here. LSU recruiting dominance

I run the Rivals.com numbers since 2002 and also compare the number of elite recruits in Louisiana this year compared to other states. It's not a banner year for in-state prospects.

A huge part of coaching is recruiting. I wasn't just rating their game-day decision-making. But in fairness to Carroll, look at him compared to John Cooper. Cooper was an incredible recruiter at Ohio State, but he never won anything of significance and couldn't beat Michigan. Carroll's teams have excelled in big games against teams close to USC in talent.

Stoops' teams have won a ton of big games in the Big 12, including a long run of dominance over Texas that Brown only recently has reversed. But I understand your point.

A better top-10 coaching list

Rivals.com rated Les Miles the 28th-best college football coach behind guys like Iowa's Kirk Ferentz (No. 5), North Carolina State's Tom O'Brien (No. 14), Kansas' Mark Mangino (No. 19) and South Florida's Jim Leavitt (No. 27).

Here's the link to my list of top-10 coaches, which includes the link to the original story that barely had MIles among the top 30.
