re: Would You Rather Live Near Smokies or Rockies?
Posted by TheTigerSaint on 6/29/25 at 11:09 am to ColoradoCock
For me it would be neither, it would be up in the Shenandoah Mountains in Virginia and West Virginia.
Sure the peaks aren't as high as the Smokies and Rockies, but that's not a huge deal to me. You don't get as hot as you do in the Smokies in the summer, nor as cold or extreme as you do out in the Rockies in the winter.
My concern with the Smokies is that, while Hurricane Helene might have slowed it down, long term I worry about western North Carolina getting overrun by people from the Northeast and ruining the character. For eastern Tennessee, I worry about it getting overrun by people from western North Carolina who have been priced out as well as being overrun by southerners from other states.
My concerns with the Rockies is the same, just in general getting overrun by the people priced out from California, Oregon and Washington. I'm not into skiing or snowboarding so that's not a consideration for me. I love the Rockies, but more to visit.
For me if it's the eastern side of the U.S., it's the Shenandoah Mountains in Virginia and West Virginia. Or if it's the western side of the U.S., it's the Cascade Mountains in far northern California or Oregon.

I'm 41 and I've honestly given up on dating. I'm definitely in a rut, it's been 8 years since my last significant relationship. My longest relationship has only ever been just over a year (ironically the last relationship I had). It's been just over 2 years since I've even had sex.
I feel like I would be a caricature of the broken dating society. A lot of women I was interested in when I was in my 20s and 30s friend zoned me. I actually lost 2 of the women as friends when I told them I wanted to hook up with them or date them, but that I was tired of being in the friend zone. Some of the women I dated in my 30s were just not particularly attractive, but I was desperate.
After my last relationship, I knew I had to stop settling. But then I did online dating. I did Hinge, then Bumble and finally the cesspool that is Facebook dating. Hinge and Bumble I had very limited success. Very few days and the few I did, we never got past a second date. Facebook dating, I've never met any of my matches on there in real life.
I don't like being alone, and I'll admit I'm lonely. But it just doesn't seem worth it anymore.
I don't know about most of you here, I'm 41 and I'll easily date 28 - 45. But I'm not dating a woman with kids. I'm not cleaning up another man's mess. It's so hypocritical that women want a "serious man" after they've had their fun. And many men, like myself, are angry because we never got to have that fun and then the women want us to "be a man and step up".
I know my view of women is probably too toxic to date at this point. I don't hate women, and I would like a relationship, but count me in as someone who thinks it's simply isn't worth the work anymore.

re: How is NO as a family destination for thanksgiving?

Regarding Bayou Classic, how much longer does New Orleans tolerate that event?
I love New Orleans, but I know that's one weekend I won't ever be in the city. Closet I ever came was in 2011 when I went to a Saints game the Monday Night after Thanksgiving, but I wasn't in the city proper until Sunday afternoon. At that point the Bayou Classic crowd was gone.
But from what I hear, the crowd isn't nearly as big as it used to be. I'm in Florida and it's the same as the Florida Classic. I remember even in the late 2000s when the Florida Classic was a big event, now it's a shadow of it's former self. Plus it's the type of crowd that doesn't spend a lot of money. Seems like it's more hassle than it's worth.

re: When was the last time you had a white uber/lyft driver?

Ironically I was in New Orleans last week and I had a white guy from Pearl River, MS as my lyft driver.
He was telling me he hates this time of year because half the teachers in the U.S. become uber/lyft drivers for the summer. So of course more competition for rides and the price plummets.
I can't complain since my ride from the French Quarter to the airport was only $26, but I could see where that would be an issue.
I live in Orlando. About a year ago I got an old lady doing uber/lyft. She said she lived in Leesburg. Needless to say that was an interesting experience. Felt sorry for her and man was her driving terrible.
