I went from non athletic guy, smoked about a pack aday from freshman HS until I quit on my 30th bday.
Bought a bike and started riding, self taught swimmer and running ( low and slow). Stayed with it .
Started and finished probably 70 triathlons/duathlons, 3 marathons, 15 IM races.
Qualified for Hawaii in 2018 and finally raced it in 2022.
So about 32 years of multisport racing and that includes running a tri club, regional BOD for USAT ,
President of Board for 3 years and 6 years as a head race official.
Determination and staying in the zone got my dream shot to Kona.
But I will say this and call me crazy, marathoning is harder than IM racing, but IM will challenge you and make you a time manager and your social life may suffer. But……..finishing an IM is truely a high like no other. Finishing IM puts you in an exclusive club.
In 2019 IM Hawaii announcer said that 93K around the world raced an IM. Only 3000 make it to the puer in Kona. Damn.
Then you take 3000 athletes ( way high number ) X 50 years at Kona ( estimate) = 150,000 have crossed that finish line. Man that was special.
Put an IM on your schedule and begin a 1year workout in phases to get yourself ready for race day. Remember, race day is a long long day of staying focused, on your A game, no mistakes and you can have a good day.Anything can happen on race day.
Pick you a course that best suits your strengths.i am a flatlander ( NE Indiana) and racing Lake Placid, Wisconsin 4X, Coeur d Alene and Hawaii……..frigging hills were a challenge.Every IM is different and out of 15, maybe 6 were good days, the others……..got mt arse kicked and kicked hard.
And remember…..if you finish the race your legs hurt for a week. If you quit the race, your head hurts forever
Good Luck with the direction u choose

Goldennugget………
Nice work there. I can remember those days of doing 2 workouts a day for sometimes weeks before a day off. Ramping up those miles and yards to crazy crazy distances.
Not racing this year at all and hoping for the motivation to returning next year. That will a challenge like no other. I will be 66 and will try
For the pre-Kona fitness again. Kinda got the
Green light to go for another bike purchase. Mine is 15 years old but still fast.
If and if I make another run at IM, looking at Lake
Placid or Panama City.

Bama vs PSU , Sugar Bowl, goal line stance, Bama wins.....signed by
painter
Nick Saban signed football
Golden Flake tins from every NC Bama won since the Bryant days
Prothro signed pic making that behind the back catch
other side of my basement is the 15 IM finishes, not football but
pretty frigging hard sport and add Kona to that 15......not bad

IM Texas 2016 stung me good, thought I was ready for the heat
but I was wrong. The only thing that saved me that day was about M4 of the
run, bad arse storm came in, pounded with heavy rain and wind, sirens going
off.....crazy scene. That dropped temps about 20deg, by then it was too
late. Finished though, got my arse kicked.
Worst swim for me was IM MOO 2019, roughest water I ever swam
in and was all over that swim course.

Cdawg……..well said
I can see the argument that slow finishers may not deserve Kona chance. I remember applying for the Legacy spot after 2018. Covid hit and cancelled me 3x before I raced in 2022.
That application to WTC asked me questions on my journey. I really think they at what you as an athlete is giving back.
Me, man 30+ years in the sport, ran a tri club for 6 years, race director 2x (did not like that venture)head official for 6 years, regional board and regional president for USAT, volunteered at countless races
With volunteer at 4 IM races.
Trust me, Kona was hard because something happened and lost both legs off the bike. IMO, when racing IM slow or fast, go days bad days……you will have them. But per WTC Kona Legacy rules, you had to race and finish to keep eligble. So on many of those races i had a choice like everyone else. When in trouble you can quit or finish the race.
I truely planned on a great finish in Kona, I finished but not the way i wanted. Not good enough for me.
So all those chasing that Kona slot or Legacy, keep that dream alive. I did for 32 years, and finished.

Jon A thon, pretty much sums it up. Great advice from Jon.
Few years ago I was training with a buddy of mine and his FTP was about 270, and mine was 225. We would go out on long training rides that had alot of interval work and after we started it took him like 1M and he was out of sight.
The man above gave him a great engine for racing triathlons where he now podiums at the 70.3 and 140.6 distance.

Forgot to say this. After the race the next 3 days in Kona i ate and drank everything in sight. Frigging hungry. Left kona feeling tired as expected but smell and taste were off. Got back to Indiana, did a covid test…….full blown covid. Crap to the basement for 2 weeks. It took 80% of my hearing away, but i finished.
Little fact that shocked me on Hawaii. NBC & youtube coverage of the 2019 race, they said 93K
Around the world raced an IM race. Only 3K make it to the pier in Kona. That was a reality check on me

ST…….nice comments there. I started racing multisport back in 1991 for change in life from where i was. Got my butt kicked for years…..loved it. Figuring out endurance racing is a challenge.
Stuck with it and 1999 did for full IM race. Got destroyed but finished. I was hooked. Wife said if you ever had the chance to do Kona Hawaii would you. Yes I said, i will mortgage the house. That did not go over well. So i kept doing IM races every two years as the three kids were growing.
I was sitting on 7 finishes and Hawaii opened the door for average athletes. I needed 12 finishes to qualify for Legacy athlete. I came up with a plan, wife let me go for it and i did 5IM races in 24 months. Fun, frigging hard and for sure taxing.
I got to 12, after IM Chatty i applied and was accepted. Oh shite…..a dream come true. I qualified and was invited to race Kona in 2020. Then covid hit. And cancelled me 3x and the 4th was a GO.
Raced the IMWC in Kona in 2022. Ah man, what an experience. Got my butt kicked off the bike, 5M into the run, my mind said go, body said no. I was now in survival mode. 2 choices, quit and go home or fight to the end. I took the fight. Ended up walking and shuffling for 21 miles. Embarrassing. I got it though in 16:13 hours.
That race cost me 25K…….to me worth it.
I raced Kona at 63, and getting back into it, health is good and goal is to do 2 more and at 70 try to win a slit and go back.

Yes, if your running and all that impact, good shoes make a difference. I currently run in HOKA’s and add inserts with elastic shoe laces. Good to go tor 300 miles max, then new shoes.
Pretty much train in the heat up here, i like it. Before this race in july, its out of the pool and into sauna for :20-:30min to het use to the heat
I agree on the heat. You all are much farther south than me but i get tested in our heat in a few weeks.
To me its all about hydration, timing, electrolytes and runs are doable
