I am starting to think the SEC postseason looks like this:

9 NCAA Tournament teams
7 2nd round teams
2 Sweet 16 teams
0 Elite 8 teams

During the Bama-Arizona game, the announcers said that the game was the 40th matchup of the season between Top 25 teams.

… and then it hit me: Auburn and Alabama have played in 9 of those 40 games. Nearly one quarter of ranked vs ranked matchups in the entire country has involved Auburn or Bama. Just amazing.

Man that 1 or 2 minute stretch was unbelievable. Just absolute self destruction.

Oats is still a great coach though.
I think Florida has a good bit of upside… probably the most actually.

Ole Miss should be lower… like maybe dead last.

Kentucky obviously should be higher.

Using KenPom:

Auburn’s losses are against #1, #6, and #9. Wins over #16, #28, and #81 all by double digits.

Arkansas lost to #4 and #14. Wins over #10 and #25.

Like I said, almost zero difference. Only difference is Auburn has played an extra game against a top team.

Aubie isn’t that good. They are going to struggle when conference play opens.

Almost zero difference in Auburn’s and Arkansas’ resumes at this point, but sure.

Auburn wins 92-78. Sloppy game and poor defensive play, but I’ll take it. One more win over Queens in a few weeks and Auburn will have navigated our schedule to avoid any Quad 4 losses… with a new coach and almost an entirely new team, that’s all we needed to do to put us in good position heading into SEC play. Wins over St John’s and NC State will be big for the resume.
4- Duke, UConn, Michigan State

3- Michigan, Gonzaga, Arizona, BYU, Alabama, Illinois,

2- Iowa State, Vanderbilt, Purdue, North Carolina, Auburn, USC

15 total teams

I’m not sure how to explain the phrase, “ For Auburn (total enrollment; Fall 2025) here are the number of students from each state:” any more clearly

Absolutely positively 100% guaranteed wrong.

Read the OP carefully next time.
So based off some of the info many have responded, along with some digging I did on my own…

% of Students from the SEC footprint:

88.70%- Mississippi
87.90%- Arkansas
86.64%- Oklahoma*
84.30%- Auburn
81.10%- Texas
78.50%- Ole Miss
78.49%- Florida
74.61%- Tennessee
74.17%- LSU
69.07%- Alabama
38.15%- Vanderbilt

Couldn’t locate data for some of the others. Haven’t yet tried to find S Carolina, Kentucky, or Missouri. Also, Oklahoma’s data was for the freshmen class only.

Here is the % of in-state kids:

79.20%- Texas
73.50%- Florida
64.20%- Tennessee
62.40%- Mississippi State
62.30%- LSU
56.00%- Auburn
48.90%- Ole Miss
46.99%- Oklahoma
45.50%- Arkansas
42.40%- Alabama
15.15%- Vanderbilt

To me, Tennessee has the most unique student body, geographically speaking. They have a relatively high percentage of instate kids (64.2%), but their out-of-state kids seem to come from way far off places… even more so than Alabama. Only 10.4% of their student body comes from out of state AND inside the SEC footprint.

While Alabama has the most geographically diverse student body of the public schools, they do take a much higher 26.64% from other states in the SEC footprint.

Some other oddities I found interesting…

36.5% of Oklahoma’s freshmen come from Texas.
28.2% of Arkansas’ freshmen come from Texas.
11.3% of Auburn’s freshmen come from Georgia.

These appear to be the only three schools that have more than 10% of their student body from one single state outside the home state.

Alabama and Auburn both have 1% of their student body from far off Colorado… totaling 800 total students between the two. It seems ooddly high considering Arkansas is half the distance closer to Colorado and only 0.4% of their students come from there…. Tennessee has 0.6% from Colorado and they have a higher percentage of kids from far away compared to Auburn. It’s odd both Auburn and Bama are drawing a decent number from so far away.

Over 9% of Alabama’s student body is from Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Massachusetts. That 1 out of every 11 kids who probably grew up going to the beach on the Jersey Shore.

For Auburn (total enrollment; Fall 2025) here are the number of students from each state:

Alabama- 18,758 (56.0%)
Georgia- 3,789 (11.3%)
Florida- 1,675 (5.0%)
Texas- 1,283 (3.8%)
Tennessee- 1,264 (3.5%)
S Carolina- 381 (1.1%)
Kentucky- 364 (1.1%)
Louisiana- 291 (0.9%)
Mississippi- 245 (0.7%)
Missouri- 153 (0.5%)
Arkansas- 97 (0.3%)
Oklahoma- 61 (0.2%)

Total enrollment from inside the SEC footprint = 84.3%

I think Oregon’s and Ole Miss’ odds should be lower. I think Bama’s and Oklahoma’s are higher.
Auburn has played in all of those except the Orange and Rose… however they did play a “BCS National Title Game” at the Rose Bowl.

Two more great seasons to get our butts over .500, we got this.

The SEC standings through the 1963 (1933-1963):

1. Tennessee- .662 (115-56-11)
2. Alabama- .649 (126-64-18)
3. Ole Miss- .623 (98-57-1)
4. Georgia Tech- .616 (115-70-9)

Up through 1963, Ole Miss was an SEC Big Dog.

Then in 1964, the Rebel program entered a 56-year period of Darkness… going 171-239-4 (.418) in conference play for that more than a half a century period.

Are the past 5 seasons the new normal or are they a short blip of success that’s part of the overall 60-year trend? Will be interesting to see how the Golden era does.
Here are my likely controversial thoughts.

1. I think Arkansas would have been better off had they stayed with the Texas teams and joined the Big 12. Through 1991, Arky was a Top 20 program nationally and they would have been Top 4 or so in the Big 12 for the past 30 years instead of a bottom tier SEC team.

2. I think Vandy passes Kentucky in the all-time standings within the next 15 years.

3. Ole Miss was possibly on pace to get back up to above .500 in SEC play in the next 5 years had Kiffen not left. Not sure it will happen now, but we’ll see.

4. Texas A&M has been stealthily impressive after now 14 seasons in the SEC.

5. Will any of the newbies ever win an SEC title? Arky and S Carolina haven’t been able to do it in 34 seasons… A&M and Mizzou haven’t in 14 seasons… and now Texas and Oklahoma haven’t in two seasons. Starting to think it may never happen.
Sad that GT left the SEC. They won 5 SEC titles between 1933-1963. They were easily a Top 3 program in the league.

Leaving the SEC absolutely killed their program. With the exception of their 1990 National title, they’ve mostly been irrelevant since.

I think they are too far gone to ever invite back, but had they never left they’d be one of the big guys to this day I believe.

All-Time SEC Standings (1933-2025)

After more than 3,500 games played…

.765- Texas (13-4-0)
.722- Alabama (474-176-21)
.634- Georgia (397-226-14)
.616- Georgia Tech (115-70-9)
.601- Tennessee (369-242-20)
.592- LSU (367-249-22)
.575- Florida (355-260-15)
.566- Texas A&M (64-59-0)
.542- Auburn (344-289-18)
.500- Oklahoma (8-8-0)
.491- Ole Miss (297-308-15)
.483- Missouri (56-60-0)
.420- South Carolina (115-159-1)
.387- Tulane (69-113-13)
.379- Arkansas (104-171-2)
.343- Mississippi State (211-409-12)
.320- Kentucky (194-419-12)
.252- Vanderbilt (150-464-18)
.000- Sewanee (0-37-0)
I think if Notre Dame leaves their agreement with the Big 10, they should join the Big 10 and take Missouri with them to round things out with an even number.

SEC can fill the space with UNC or Clemson.

Some might say needing the officials to rig a call at the end of the game against Winthrop should be disqualifying.

In fairness, Auburn shouldn't still be ranked either.

Losses to #1, #2, and #7 with win over #22 and another win over a team that was ranked just 2 weeks ago. Yeah, we probably are ranked just about right where we should be.
