One title run (if that even were to happen) doesn’t offset 60 seasons of well below mediocrity performance.

Since 1964 (62 seasons), Ole Miss has zero titles of any sort and ranks 37th nationally in weekly AP Top 25 appearances…. That’s good enough for 12th among current SEC programs, and it’s behind programs like Stanford, Pitt, and North Carolina.

A national title is a big deal for sure, but it’s not enough to erase a 62-year performance like that…. Not close.

College football is over 150 years old. LSU has been a better program for only 20 years of that.

Tennessee fans like to think they were a blue blood before the troubles of the past quarter century, but most of the era between Neyland and when Payton Manning arrived was a whole bunch of mid.

AP Top 25 Finishes 1953-1994:

1. Oklahoma- 32
2. Alabama- 31
3. Nebraska- 30
3. Michigan- 30
5. Ohio State- 29
5. USC- 29
7. Notre Dame- 28
8. Penn State- 36
9. Auburn- 24
10. Texas- 23
11. UCLA- 21
12. Arkansas- 20
13. Tennessee- 19
14. LSU- 18
14. Miami- 18

As you can see, in this 42-season period leading up to Manning’s arrival, Tennessee ranked sixth of now-SEC programs in terms of Top 25 finishes. Also notice LSU is pretty much equal to Tennessee during that period.

Now look at Top 10 finishes 1953-1994:

1. Alabama- 24
2. Oklahoma- 23
3. Nebraska- 22
4. Notre Dame- 21
4. Michigan- 21
6. Penn State- 19
7. Ohio State- 18
8. USC- 15
9. Auburn- 14
9. Texas- 14
11. Arkansas- 13
11. Miami- 13
13. UCLA- 11
14. LSU- 10
14. Georgia- 10
14. Florida State- 10
17. Ole Miss- 9
17. Tennessee- 9
17. Michigan State- 9

Tennessee tied with Ole Miss for 8th most top 10 finishes of now-SEC programs during that 42-year period… behind LSU.

As discussed they were a better program from 2000-2020 but no numbers support anything else.

Nonsense. LSU and Tennessee were essentially equals from the 1950s through the 1980s. From 1989-2000, yes Tennessee was much better… But LSU’s accolades from 2001-present dwarf anything Tennessee had over LSU during the 1990s.

LSU is without a doubt the overall better program. It’s not all that close.

2) Which of these programs do you consider elite?

Never answerd this part. Here’s how I see it:

True Blue Bloods:
1. Alabama
2. Ohio State
3. Oklahoma
4. Notre Dame

Elites
5. Michigan
6. USC
7. Georgia
8. LSU
9. Texas
10. Nebraska
11. Florida State
12. Penn State
13. Miami
14. Florida
15. Clemson
16. Tennessee
17. Auburn

There is a giant gap between the Top 17 and everyone else… Clemson used to be outside the group of elites, but two recent national titles and several other Top 5 finishes pushed them well in.

For this next group, one national title would not get them into the Top 17… it would take at least two for any of these to join that group…

The Next in Line
18. Michigan State
19. UCLA
20. Washington
21. Oregon
22. Texas A&M
23. Wisconsin
24. TCU
25. Arkansas
26. Ole Miss
27. Iowa
28. Minnesota
29. Georgia Tech
30. Pittsburgh

As discussed, Ole Miss and Oregonwill both be moving up a notch or two.

Here are my program rankings… mostly based on historical success but weighted to reward recent success more so than past… the formula is not yet updated through this year:

1. Alabama
3. Oklahoma
7. Georgia
8. LSU
9. Texas
14. Florida
16. Tennessee
17. Auburn
22. Texas A&M
25. Arkansas
26. Ole Miss
36. Missouri
52. South Carolina
59. Miss State
63. Kentucky
75. Vanderbilt

This season’s results are not in the model yet, so regardless of what happens from this point Ole Miss will jump ahead of #25 Arkansas and #24 TCU. If Ole Miss were to win a national title, it looks like they’d also jump over #23 Wisconsin, #22 Texas A&M, and #20 Washington….. Oregon currently at #21 is set to gain some points also so with a National Title Ole Miss would be extremely close to landing at #19 along with UCLA and Oregon… those three would be very closely packed together at 19-21.

But that’s only if Ole Miss were to win a natty this year. Lose one more game and the Rebs will be #24 all-time.

The gap between #17 Auburn and #18 Michigan State is so large, Ole Miss could win TWO national titles and they’d still be stuck at #18, behind Auburn. It would take 3 national titles to pass Auburn if you wanted to do it quickly.

For Ole Miss to get back to Big 6 status, they are going to need to string together several more great seasons… there’s a lot of catching up to do.

Excluding the newby expansion teams…

All-Time SEC Win%
.722- Alabama
.634- Georgia
.601- Tennessee
.592- LSU
.575- Florida
.542- Auburn
.491- Ole Miss

At 297-308-15, Ole Miss is still below .500 all-time.

All-Time Weeks in AP Poll
4. Alabama- 906
10. Georgia- 694
11. LSU- 686
12. Tennessee- 649
13. Florida- 648
14. Auburn- 604
21. Arkansas- 432
26. Ole Miss- 366

The gap between the real Big 6 and Ole Miss is absolutely enormous in that stat.

SEC Championships
30- Alabama
16- Georgia
13- Tennessee
12- LSU
8- Auburn
8- Florida
6- Ole Miss

Not too far behind, but still two titles away from Auburn’s and Florida’s totals…. And not having won one since 1963 doesn’t instill much confidence that that gap can be closed anytime soon.

National Titles
13- Alabama
4- LSU
3- Georgia
3- Florida
2- Auburn
2- Tennessee

Zero for Ole Miss… that’s a problem. Two more wins this season and you can notch one though.

Winning % Against the Big 6:
.500- vs. Florida (13-13-1)
.405- vs. LSU (43-64-4)
.315- vs. Tennessee (20-44-1)
.310- vs. Georgia (15-34-1)
.255- vs. Auburn (12-35-0)
.164- vs. Alabama (10-55-2)
—————————————
.320- vs. The Big 6 (113-245-9)

That’s bad. Every current Big 6 member is up over 45% all-time against the other teams in the group. Ole Miss would have to win 66 consecutive games against the Big 6 without losing any just to get to 45%. Not happening.

Here’s the deal…. Ole Miss is fortunate to have an ancient history that won them six titles back before most anyone alive today can remember…. That helps. But a few good seasons (with zero titles of any form so far) aren’t going to make up for a 60-year period that Ole Miss failed to win any championships of any kind and mostly suffered losing seasons.

To join those other six, Ole Miss would at least need to win a couple national titles… a few modern day SEC titles… and would probably need to string together another 10-20 seasons of Top 10 or 15 finishes to get somewhat in the discussion.

Thats the thing about the Big 6… 1, 2, or even 10 seasons doesn’t get you in the club and they also don t cause you to fall out. The status quo was mostly established over a century of time.

Just pulled the trigger and bought four tickets. I hope to see a lot of orange in the stands.
We’re five years removed from the last time Bama played for a national title… Saban was coach for 3 of the last 5 seasons.

Here is Bama’s average point margin per game against Power 4/5 Opponents going back to 2007, ranked best to worst:

+29.1 Bama 2020
+27.1 Bama 2011
+24.7 Bama 2012
+24.0 Bama 2018
+23.6 Bama 2016
+22.5 Bama 2017
+21.5 Bama 2019
+19.9 Bama 2013
+17.0 Bama 2010
+15.7 Bama 2015
+15.3 Bama 2022 (Saban’s 2nd to last season)
+15.3 Bama 2009
+14.3 Bama 2008
+13.1 Bama 2014
+13.1 Bama 2021 (Saban’s 3rd to last season)
+8.3 Bama 2023 (Saban’ last season)
+7.9 Bama 2024 (DeBoar Year 1)
+2.1 Bama 2007 (Saban Year 1)
+2.0 Bama 2025 (DeBoar Year 2)

Bama beat Power Conference Opponents by 14+ points or more on average beginning with Saban’s second season in 2008 all the way through 2020.

Saban fell short of that mark in 2021… barely got above it in 2022… and then fell well short of it in 2023 before he cut and ran.

Sure, DeBoar has probably faired worse, but he inherited a program that had peaked three years earlier and already begun to fall off.

Being +2 per game in point differential against 13 power conference opponents is not bad. DeBoar needs several more years to get it going.

Yeah but the stadium was still full.

Rose Bowl Crowd Split

Posted by AUTiger789 on 1/2/26 at 10:01 am
It was hard to tell how many fans each team had because of the similar colors. I kept waiting for the cameras to show footage of Bama fans heading for the exits…

But then when the trophy presentation was going on, and the stadium was still full, I realized bama barely had any fans there from the start.

What was it… like a 90-10 crowd split?
W/L record also shown in ( )

+111 Georgia (9-2)
+92 Vanderbilt (7-3)
+78 Texas A&M (8-2)
+68 Ole Miss (8-1)
+29 Texas (7-3)
+26 Alabama (9-4)
+25 Oklahoma (7-3)
+22 Tennessee (5-5)
+14 Missouri (5-5)
-26 LSU (4-6)
-27 Auburn (2-7)
-65 South Carolina (2-8)
-82 Florida (3-7)
-92 Miss State (2-7)
-97 Arkansas (0-9)
-106 Kentucky (2-7)

As far as the rest of the P4 teams… Here are the Top 5 nationally:

+280 Indiana (11-0)
+248 Texas Tech (9-2)
+240 Ohio State (10-2)
+233 Notre Dame (8-2)
+223 Oregon (10-1)

Here are the bottom 5 teams…

-154 Wisconsin (2-8)
-156 Colorado (1-9)
-205 Purdue (0-10)
-226 Syracuse (1-9)
-243 Oklahoma State (0-10)
.600- Big 12 (12-8)
.520- SEC (13-12)
.476- Big 10 (10-11)
.344- ACC (11-21)

As much as the Big 10 fans have been pumping their chests, I’d expect them to be at least above .500 on the year… but no.
After failing to reach the title game the past two seasons, it was pretty much over already… but had Georgia come back this season to win their 3rd in five seasons it would have proven the dynasty wasn’t dead.

It’s now officially dead… if there is even such a thing as a two-year dynasty.
Since November 16th, 2025.

Bama’s last 4 games…

280 total yards vs Auburn
209 total yards vs Georgia
260 total yards vs Oklahoma
193 total yards vs Indiana
Bama’s last few games:

280 total yards vs Auburn
209 total yards vs Georgia
260 total yards vs Oklahoma
193 total yards vs Indiana

Average of just 235 yards per game in the final four weeks.
I’d say Miami 1983-1992 as well as as Clemson 2015-2020 were elite runs that seemingly popped up out of nowhere.

Will be interesting to see if Indiana can sustain this for fall off after just a year or two.

BYU 1984
Georgia Tech 1990

Those were national titles that made no sense then nor even a year or two later.
“Always”

Yet the only BIG10 national championships since 1980:

1997: Michigan
2002: Ohio State
2014: Ohio State
2023: Michigan
2024: Ohio State

Just 5 titles… from just two programs.

Meanwhile titles won by the SEC since 1980:

1980: Georgia
1992: Alabama
1996: Florida
1998: Tennessee
2003: LSU
2006: Florida
2007: LSU
2008: Florida
2009: Alabama
2010: Auburn
2011: Alabama
2012: Alabama
2015: Alabama
2017: Alabama
2020: Alabama
2023: Georgia

Sixteen titles won by six different programs.
Gotta be the longest running commercial in tv history.
I feel like anywhere in the French Quarter probably has rats. I avoid that area if at all possible.

Tennessee hasn’t actually been good since 2022.

Auburn has been ranked #1 in the AP poll for 9 weeks total.

Yeah but that’s misleading. In 2010, Auburn was without a doubt the best team, and we went 14-0. We only made it to #1 in the final two poll releases. We can’t help that the voters got it wrong for the first 14 polls.

Same thing happened in 1957. Took voters 11 weeks to finally put undefeated Auburn at #1 where they would ultimately finish.
