Help Diversify My Portfolio

Posted by ZaphodBeeblebrox on 8/4/21 at 9:31 pm
In 1980, my wife (pic below) received 50 shares of Coca Cola and Truist Financial Corporation as a graduation gift from her grandmother. The dividends were reinvested in each company and they grew quite considerably over the last 23 years.

Current status:

She wants to sell off 72 shares of KO ($4,039.20) & 18 shares of TFC ($982.62) to fund a position in SLI.

I'm not trying to talk her out of it but wanted to know if this is a sound strategy.

Of course I understand risk/reward of investing. What says the MB gurus?

For your trouble (kinda like this but a 40yr old milf)

Why is my balance going down?
Started out @ $30,798.00 on 6/15
Then I made future allocation changes & saw this activity.
6/16 $30,717.91
6/17 $30,526.52
6/18 $30,454.96
6/19 $30,075.51

Any idea?

Did you roll the old 401k to an IRA?

Yes. Sorry for misrepresenting that. The 401K was established when I started working in 1998. I left the private sector five years ago to teach because it is less stress on my body (but more stress on my heart and head).

This is a 403B for the county school system retirement savings plan with Transamerica. I have a 401K (that I still contribute $400/month to) from previous employment that I cannot merge with this account.

Just wanted the MT's opinion on what I was looking at as far as the allocation distribution between the funds.
Well, that's not a good strategy, mate!
No offense taken.

Answered that question here LINK

Thanks for you input!
75 VSTAX
15 Euro
10 New World

Thanks again!
Thanks, you all have been helpful.

During my meeting with the account manager today, he only recommended reducing my bond investments to 0 and reallocating that (17%) as evenly as possible into American Fund Growth Fund of America R4, Vanguard Windsor, and Vanguard Total Stock Market Index.

I didn't make the changes because I wanted to hear the MT guru's opinions.

I think I'm going to go

34% VSTAX
33% American Funds Europacific Growth R4
33% American Funds New World R4

and see how that goes for a little while.

Thanks again everyone for all the help.

Vanguard total stock market index is probably your best bet.

So are you saying put 100% into that fund?

Help me do better?

Why do you need a financial consultant?

Poor choice of words? Account manager maybe a more appropriate term.
I'm 45 and just started teaching five years ago. This is what is in my 403B that I recently converted to a 403B Roth.

Does that change your opinion?

Which of the three that are visible?
He made some interesting suggestions to take a more aggressive approach to my investment strategy.

Anybody want to look over my allocations and make recommendations to see if they match up with his?

This is my current allocation distribution. (excuse the picture quality)

When you clicked on the assessors maps there was a disclaimer, read it

I did, that's why I stated

"I know the boundary line may not be accurate in the photo"

But I guess everyone just wants to overlook it and tell me what I've already stated. Perhaps next time I will be more explicit that I know this is not to be used on legal documents and that the County Assessor makes every effort to produce the most accurate information possible. No warranties, expressed or implied are provided for the data herein, its use or interpretation. The assessment information is from the last certified tax roll. All other data is subject to change.

I appreciate your expertise and insight. You provided great detail about the intricacies of property lines.

Time to call a surveyor and pony up the $$$

I know the lafourche tax assessor maps are pretty far off of actually property lines. So may not be the best judge.

Thanks, covered that in the OP. :doublebird:

the neighbor on the corner and the neighbor behind you have the gap between their fences.

The strip between the three neighbor's houses was designated for a walkway to what was originally designed to be a green space. My property butts up against it.

Is it always wet just behind your fence?

There's a swale about smack in the middle running the length of the property

Just curious, but did you draw a box the size of you lot limits and lay it over your property to come to this conclusion?
I did not.
The box is highlighted via the tax assessor website.

If the place is located in a subdivision then it's likely there are already survey rebar in place. Do you have an abstract?

It's in a sub. What's an abstract?
