re: LSU May Be Unbeatable

I was very impressed by LSU"s speed on offense. They are noticeably very fast. I watched the game thinking if LSU could shake early season rust away they could be exceedingly good.
re: USA Today: Top 10 Best Colleges for Sports Fans
Posted by Willowglen on 8/28/25 at 7:16 pm to bamabaseballsec
I am a Duke alum. It is nowhere near the top for sports fans. Basketball is a unique experience, but there is a limited number of seats at Cameron (it was built as a copy of the Palestra in Philadelphia) and guys like me on athletic scholarship couldn’t invest my time camping for games. Football is an underwhelming experience, not up to Vandy level, and sports like men’s lacrosse, where they attract enormous talent, draw very little. When the NCAA football scheme consolidates to 40 or so teams, Duke may not be in the game. Dont get me wrong - Duke was a great no cost education for me, but it is a so-so environment for sports fans.
History of SEC Football - Part 5 on ESpN

This documentary series is fantastic.
There are many great stories.
Pat Dye and Bear Bryant from very poor rural circumstances. They had a lot in common. Tough minded.
Auburn beating Alabama after 9 years by Bo Jackson leaping to the goal line. Jackson was interviewed saying he high jumped 7 feet in high school. So he was confident. My jaw hit the floor watching this - even though I knew this - I won a national high school championship high school track race at the time in Atlanta and in track circles there was a feeling Jackson could do anything. My college coach, an Olympic team coach, thought he could have been an Olympic champ in the decathlon. Jackson’s finest memory? The fans after the Iron Bowl paying respect to his mother, who raised several children by working two full time maid jobs. More than a game.
The story of Jeremiah Castile. His parents had 4th grade educations, with lots of violence and dysfunction. A poor African American kid with a heart a mile wide. . He took his signing bonus from the NFL and paid for his mother’s rehab. Really? What character. Castile was a pall bearer at Bryant’s funeral. I came from a broken poverty stricken home and made my own way to college entirely on my own but my life was a picnic compared to his.
My impression? The south has in its sports history has some of the most tough minded people one could come across.
Just a great documentary series.

Your best coach ever was John McDonnell in xc and track. Never again will any coach win as many championships.
It wasn't only that his guys were great. They routinely over performed in NCAA's. The antithesis of chokers.

The Achilles heel with this lsu squad is Van Lith. Men or women tourney pls I’d about guard play. Van Lith has proven to be an undersized two guard. Walz at Louisville knew what he was doing by not having her play point.

This young woman is from Australia and doesn't have family here. One can be confident LSU will take care of her, but the team's stars need to step up and watch out for her. In a game against Auburn, I saw Ms Poa about as exhausted as a player can be, so she is a tough player and I hope she comes through.
re: Angel Reese WGAF?
Posted by Willowglen on 11/21/23 at 3:44 pm to themunch
Great coach. Reese having issues with being a solid teammate. As Mulkey indicated, a locker room issue. Reese can earn her way back in, but must earn it. LSU did play well as a team without Reese, but down the line could use her talents. I note she was benched for throwing up a 3 point shot 10 seconds into the possession. Mulkey is way too good of a coach to limit Reese on 3 pointers, but they need to be in the flow of the offense. If an open 3 pointer with 5 seconds on the shot clock is necessary, Mulkey surely would accept while beseeching the team to perhaps get a better shot, but that shot would be on the flow of a team offense. Van Lith needs to be a better passer, but she knows it and is not defensive - attitude matters and Van Lith knows the value of her coach. Reese has quirky game - reminds me of Cedric Maxwell of the Celtics years ago and her talent shines through even though the weird shots take some getting used to. My guess is that Reese will be better for this.

EKG has nailed it. The initial payment will be paid by the Foundation, with later payouts intended to be paid by the athletic department. I would guess the Foundation may step in and pay some payments again.

Track guys at Oregon (one of the best in the nation - although no one will ever accomplish what Arkansas had done) and Washington (8 guys under 4 minutes for a mile this year) are worried. Travel to the east is not easy and takes time. No rivalries or fast races at Stanford either. Query whether track will in five years become only viable at the schools with the top 25 football programs. Rest assured Arkansas will be one of the them. I get many don't like track, but McDonnell brought guys in who were not D1 quality athletes as walk-ons and made them NCAA champions (he had great recruited guys too). That legacy won't go away - I ran against Arkansas at Penn Relays - got dusted despite running a top 10 time. Much respect.

Bahamian prisons are no joke. Conditions are very rough and the very nature of her alleged crime means alienation from her family. Not sure I have sympathy but if she was going to do this she should have found a way to do it in the YS.

I lived in Omaha in the early 80’s and went to the CWS twice. I don’t recall a game where the ball just isn’t getting any distance. Some of the balls which are well hit are well short of the warning track. Yes, the pitchers are great but just a dead ball evening

Bennett is far more talented than his game manager label indicates. His receivers are bigger and stronger than TCU's, and he has a good line in front of him, but he makes throws into tight windows consistently.

No surprise at Georgia winning. But this game isn't remotely competitive. That is a bit surprising.
re: Tennessee 31 @ Clemson 14 Final - ESPN

Coaching is suspect this year for Clemson. They play in such a weak league, they would have been undefeated but for starting a non Division 1 level qb all year. The fake field goal is just another bad coaching look.
re: SEC Rant changed to Vitello Rant?
Posted by Willowglen on 6/23/22 at 10:13 pm to BigOrangeBri
I just finished watching the SEC Network's documentary on Tameka Catchings. Vitello`s squad does Tennessee no favors in terms of reputation, with no question that they do make things interesting though. Catchings makes Tennessee look great. Her respect for Pat, her great foundation which supports kids, her winning smile and her success in overcoming speech and hearing impediments made me think much more highly of Tennessee than prior to watching. Of course, I then think of the clown show their football squad has been in the last 15 years and I snap back top reality. The documentary made me laugh in a way as there is no need to engage of Champions of Life drivel when you see the real thing like Catchings. By the way, Ole Miss just shows how great the SEC in baseball. Arkansas' performance did too - the baseball gods just had the hogs run into a great pitching performance.

I just returned from New York on a business trip. There is actually a watering hole/bar on 44th Street near 2nd Avenue.A and M flags out front and yell leader photos and other similar photos inside. I stepped in, and the bar guy asked me if I was from Texas. I said no, but was fascinated why this place was three blocks from the UN. He said the owner is an Aggie, and the place hops in the fall. He did say they had some world series traffic. The SEC travels.
re: Congrats to Florida on winning the 2022 NCAA outdoor track and field championship (men)
Posted by Willowglen on 6/11/22 at 2:01 am to truth22
My brother and I were both Division 1 NCAA finalists in the 80's. We were competitive, but knew we couldn't touch John McDonnell's incomparable Arkansas teams. They were better because they were the most disciplined and focused group around. Kudos to Florida who won this year with sprinters, but Arkansas won with virtually all disciplines. Arkansas cares about track, frankly something most schools do not. Arkansas' AD needs to step up and really look at leadership of the track program. This is meant out of respect for the school with the best legacy imaginable in the sport.
re: Tennessee wins SEC Championships in Baseball, Basketball and Soccer
Posted by Willowglen on 5/14/22 at 9:19 pm to MetroAtlantaGatorFan
Arkansas just won yet another SEC track championship, continuing the legacy of the incomparable John McDonnell. Texas A and M catches a lot of flak here, but every year they have national and world class track athletes, making Arkansas' achievements even more impressive. I recognize track is not all that popular, but with teams like Arkansas, LSU, A and M, Florida, Tennessee, Georgia and Ole Miss the SEC is far and away the best in the nation. To give an example, the top two teams in the ,4 x 4 broke three minutes. There are only a handful of national teams in the world that can break 3 minutes! Some of the national level athletes were not highly recruited, showing that the SEC develops talent as well. 40 years ago I scored several times in the ACC. Even then, the SEC was better. Much respect.
re: Why is Texas so embarrassingly bad???
Posted by Willowglen on 9/12/21 at 5:22 pm to MetroAtlantaGatorFan
I heard a theory on a talk show that the high ranked Texas players they recruit play such an advanced state of high school football that their ceilings in college are lower than expected. Interesting point but tough to prove
re: I've seen everything I need to see, LSU is going down
Posted by Willowglen on 8/28/21 at 4:30 pm to RedDirtSooner
This game is difficult to benchmark in terms of assessing how good UCLA may be. Hawaii's tackling and defense is along the lines of Connecticut's three years ago, where UConn was starting players who were barely above good high school levels.
re: Tennessee fans you better hope Heupel does better than Frost.
Posted by Willowglen on 8/28/21 at 4:27 pm to JustGetItRight
Nebraska is a poorly coached team. And even worse, they have no speed at skill positions, and an uninspired offensive line. Illinois is at best mediocre in terms of talent but Bielema coached them well. You could tell Illinois would win simply because they were not going to commit turnovers or make dumb plays. From a spectator standpoint, the game was difficult to watch.
re: Richmond handing KENTUCKY its arse
Posted by Willowglen on 11/29/20 at 7:57 pm to JesusQuintana
Jay Bilas hit the nail on the head commenting on the Arizona State - Villanova game. He said that ASU was on paper longer and perhaps a bit quicker (Hurley can recruit), but that Villanove was superior because they played "older" - meaning good team defense, good shot selection, and a feel for dominating the game. I am not sure Kentucky could take the Villanova approach as the school is stuck with one and done's (and they get great talent), but Villanova shows what great coaching along with pretty good talent can do.
re: Why did Mason get fired?
Posted by Willowglen on 11/29/20 at 7:50 pm to Peter167
For a really good coach, Vanderbilt should be a very good job. Win 5 or 6 games a year and be reasonably competitive and a coach can stick around with none of the pressures at the big programs. Look at Cutcliffe at Duke. He makes, relatively speaking, good but not great money. But all Duke expects him to do is to be reasonably competitive (I am and old Duke alum and suffered through really miserable football in my day). Vanderbilt should be a better program and is similar to Duke. Its academics will draw a certain kind of player, likely to graduate and improve and develop each year. They are not going to be a big time program, but clearly a good coach can do much better than Mason did.

South Carolina’s team is a joy to watch. I am surprised they are so dominating after losing Herbert Harrigan - the best defensive player I have seen at the collegiate level.
re: Bama fans how will you feel if Hurts wins the Heisman?
Posted by Willowglen on 9/29/19 at 8:48 pm to 3down10
The Heisman is a popularity contest. What I find interesting is that Oklahoma and Ohio State have the easiest paths to the playoffs, and they each have transferred quarterbacks from the SEC. Alabama is very good, but they have a much less difficult road to the playoffs than Oklahoma. I would think most Alabama fans are just concerned with running the gauntlet to the playoffs again.
I watched Oklahoma carefully this weekend. It would be nice to see what they do against top flight competition. Their wide receiving corps is to my mind just shy of Alabama's, but in the Big 12 they dominate, especially with Hurts being a mature quarterback at the helm. I am dumbfounded how these teams let CeeDee Lamb open for a second, but of course far easier said than done.

re: Taggart, Morris, and Sumlin
Posted by Willowglen on 9/16/18 at 8:48 pm to Mrtommorrow1987
If FSU does go 1-11 there will be extraordinary pressure to fire Taggart. But the only way that gets done is if Taggart messes up, such as a material compliance violation, and even then, it would have to be very material to sustain a breach of contract to exact a settlement to pay less than he is owed. Lots of misery, but Taggart probably stays for his initial contract term.
I wonder, too, about the challenge of fixing a woeful offensive l8ne. Even with superb recruiting, it could take years because the OL is not a place to start freshmen. How the line got to this stage is inexplicable to me at a place like FSU.

re: Explain basic LSU economics to me
Posted by Willowglen on 12/29/17 at 9:23 pm to catholictigerfan
How one views LSU differs from the perspective of a stakeholder.
A serious and talented in-state student can do very well at LSU. On my last visit to Baton Rouge, my daughter and I met a delightful, polite and bright young African American woman from New Orleans majoring in Electrical Engineering on scholarship but also working her way through school for living expenses. I have no doubt she received a competent engineering education. And frankly representative of what one can find at a state flagship university. This of course is anecdotal, but the point remains - serious students can do well at any of the SEC schools, including LSU.
From the perspective of faculty and staff, LSU could likely be limiting for the best and brightest. They won’t consistently pay in the arms race for top faculty, and if one doesn’t obtain tenure, the next job can be difficult to obtain. If denied tenure at a Duke or Stanford, a professor can generally move on to a state flagship somewhere and succeed. A little tougher at LSU. But tenured professors at LSU likely have an enjoyable career -LSU is a major university.
From the perspective of in state residents, athletics provides great entertainment. I think the key is to use athletics as a springboard for economic development for the school. Clemson has done just that in the past view years.
LSU folks are friendly. I still wear the LSU Track T-shirt given to me decades ago while competing in Division 1 track and field. And while a Northerner by birth, kind gestures like that make me a bit of a fan.

Posted by Willowglen on 11/16/17 at 7:23 pm to AllbyMyRelf
Duke alum here. Cutcliffe moving to Tennessee just makes no sense. Duke is a job where he will always exceed expectations (most alums secretly are glad Duke is not 2-10 any longer). Duke's campus is beautiful beyond belief, talented and bright people abound, and spending the rest of a career with great job security in this kind of place is hard to beat.
