Let the gumps temporarily have their fun. You know we would have if we had won in January. One great thing about football is the slate is clean to begin every season, and LSU has a great incentive to do well every game this coming season.
Regarding recent history: Looking back to 2000 and forward, LSU won 9 times vs. 4 times for Alabama; and, with one stretch - 2003 through 2007 - of 5 straight won by LSU. Considering neither team will win 100%; we are doing just fine. We will all enjoy the Payback in Tiger stadium this November.
Typically in football, unlike bseball and basketball, the winner is determined by one game, not a series. If Bama wants a "redo" then it should be the best 2 of 3, or best of 4 of 7. If we play them again this season - if they were to win we would be at a tie and need a third game to determine the winner. How crazy is that. Bama should just give the traditional common loser's
shout out: "Wait till next year" (we'll beat you then)
Deitzel changed uniforms and helmet colors. Old ones were very dull. Old gold helmets had the single purple stripe. The three stripes (white in middle and a purple on each side of white) was very new and "hot" then. I like the current brighter uniforms much better than the previous "old gold" uniforms and helmets. Current home uniforms and helmets look great. I like to occasionally see the yellow jerseys with white helmets. I do not like the purple jerseys with the gold pants. Maybe if the purple jerseys were a lighter shade of purple with white helmets (when LSU must wear dark jerseys as the visitor) would look better.

Hey Ole Miss Rebel: Real Tigers have buryed six feet deep the false elite concept that you have to have a degree from L.S.U. to be a true fan and supporter. If you buy tickets, or for that matter buy anything in Louisiana (you are paying taxes that help support the university) then you are eligible to be a great L.S.U. Tiger fan. We would have a dull limited fan base if only LSU graduates were eligible. p.s. - I have two degrees from LSU, two brothers with degrees from LSU, both parents with degrees from LSU, children, cousins, etc. Annnnd welcome all LSU fans. Let's not be dull snobs.

re: Cannon's run question...

I may stand corrected regarding heavy rain during the 1959 LSU-Ole Miss game. Memory: I used to come up to Baton Rouge from LSU medical school in New Orleans then and, of course sit in the student section. Perhaps the heavy rain was at another game that season. You know, offical weather records can be checked to be sure.
LSU was known, on occasion, to water the field all night before a game if they thought it would help them slow down the other team the next day. See reports of LSU - North Carolina game 1949 I think. North Carolina complained to NCAA. LSU upset them 13 to 7. History sometimes is 'his' story. That, is very individually perceived, although some parts of it can be verified.

My 2 cents: I went through grammar and high school(Baton Rouge High) with Jimmy Taylor but I graduated a year early. I was in LSU medical school when Cannon made his famous run. In high school (Istrouma) Coach "Fuzzy" Brown usually sat Cannon down the second half, because Cannon and team had game wrapped up from high score and he didn't want to embarrass the other team with a hugh score - coaches sometimes did such things then - and didn't want Cannon to get injured.
You know Cannon also punted. When I was incollege Cannon won first place at SEC track meet in both 100 yard dash, and shot put. The saying went around that he was either the strongest spinter or the fastest shot putter anyone had known. That just about summed up his physical talents.
I was at the famous LSU - Ole Miss game. It rained heavily - I was soaked even though I had a rain-coat. The field was really soggy. Think Capital One Bowl turf when LSU played Penn State this past bowl season. Due to soggy field I'm sure that was not the fastest Cannon ever ran, but he was fast enough plus strong enough to beat everyone else and score.
History Bonus: Although I wasn't born when he played, I became friends with Abe Mikal. He was my teacher in medical school and became a mentor to me is specialty training. If his name comes up in the future I wll share information about longest LSU punt, longest "drop-kick" field goal. Wow, that's ancient. That's all, folks.
That's always puzzled me too. History: My dad, who graduated L.S.U. in 1925 told me in the 1940's and 50's that L.S.U. had won the national football championship in 1908. Then after the 1958 championship he used to say L.S.U. won the championship every 50 years. Of course, he was not in college or even reading in 1908. this is just oral history. I wish someone could research the details and give us the facts.
With all the bogus championships claimed by Alabama and Ole Miss I think we should claim the old ones if they are factual, not bogus. It is a diservice to LSU's history if we do not.

re: LSU vs Tulane Question

1949, old Tulane stadium on Tulane campus. Grass field. New grass was not planted. The LSU students placed salt on the grass in a big "LSU" covering 50 yard line. No logos in those days on the field. The lettering "faced" the west sideline so it was correct side up viewed from the press box. The salt killed grass and made the LSU lettering brown while the rest of the field was green. However, Tulane students had a trick too. They stole Mike the tiger, who was in the traveling cage, much like today. The students taking Mike to the game in New Orleans stopped to have coffee on the way - and the cage with Mike was disconected from the auto, and Tulane students took him. State police search with radio announcements with drama. Mike was voluntarily returned just before game. That year LSU beat Tulane (SEC champ), North Carolina (ACC champ), and ? Texas A&M (SWC champ). LSU went to Sugar Bowl and played Oklahoma on Jan 1, 1950.. Quarterback for OKLA was Daryl Royal; OKLA ran "split T" - triple option. LSU repeatedly tackled the player that had carried the ball the previous down. Okla won 35-0. That is the only time other than the 2003 BCS Championship that LSU played OKLA.
