What people seem to forget is that, even though he got kinda crazy, Pym was a pacifist through and through. Janet was the one that convinced him to become a superhero and he always had his doubts about punching and punishing people, even the bad guys.
Intentionally or not, the writers for the character made him someone with psychological/mental issues, and that's something Marvel could totally approach in the movies/comics, but... nah, why not just let people think he's simply a wife beater and nothing else.
