We had to make an emergency trip to see a sick parent. Any suggestions on points of interest? We will be here another 4 days.

I go to Essen / Dortmund for work. There is a great Greek place in Herne called Ouzo's that I highly recommend.

Schloss Westerholt is fairly close and has a great German restaurant, scenic village and golf club.

That's all I got.

by northwestern germany, do you mean like bremen/hamburg?

or the rhine/ruhr area? if the latter, the cathedrals in cologne and munster are worth the trip. charlemagne's palace and church in aachen is also worth a day trip. brussels is an option, a two-hour train ride from cologne. this all assumes that you're in the rhineland and not the far northwest.

Is the restaurant in the hotel? We are in Recklinghausen so that’s not far at all.

Nordrhein Westfalen. We can’t go far from Recklinghausen due to sick family and limited visiting hours at the hospital.

Sorry about the sick family. Hope all is ok.

Cologne is only an hour drive and is very nice. Munster is less than an hour. And of course there's Essen and Dortmund. I just drove through there this week for work.

Thanks for the recs. Unfortunately, we have not been able to get further than downtown all week. Hopefully the next trip will be under better circumstances. Now we are looking for a doll or antique shop to get a few things to bring home.
