Looking to get a cabin for a few days and camp for 5 days. Any recommendations on the surrounding area (mountains)?

We camp (car camp) a lot on Mogollon Rim and love that area. Don't know if they have cabins available though. I will say labor day weekend....most campsites (free dispersed or the little paid ones) get pretty packed.

We've camped on the rim near Woods Canyon Lake and also Blue Ridge reservoir. Lots of dispersed camping on the rim.

Thanks! Yes, this is a second interview, getting to know the office-people and such. I would have to live in the Phoenix metro if I took the job. I'm scoping out Gilbert/Chandler area, Apache Junction, and Carefree and Queens Creek as outliers. I want to get my son into an autistic charter school out there. I'm wondering about services out there for him, but I imagine there is more there than St. Tammany Parish. Only thing I worry about there is the summer, but I've put up with SELA summers my whole life, so....

Why Apache Junction?

What kind of camping? You need toilets and/or showers or you good with digging a cat hole?

Apache junction to live if I take the job, will see what it's like when we go out there. I have a shovel and a stand up toilet seat. We're geared for national forest road (primative) camping. It's what we've mostly done in Colorado and such. Free camping!

Apache junction, carefree, and queen creek are really far. Keep that in mind for your work commute.

Gilbert is a very family friendly. My coworker lives there and loves it.

Also....another area to consider for cabins/camping is Mt Lemmon in Tucson. I’ve never stayed there but my a coworker rented a cabin up there and loved it.

If you move to the East valley the drive to Tucson will be quicker than driving up to northern AZ.

LINK / is a great resource when looking for BLM land.

There are some great places up on Mogollon Rim where you can just take off down FR 300 and then just look for a primitive road into the forest that will take you to the edge of the rim. I have hung a hammock a few feet from the rim up there and the views are great.

Since Mt Lemmon was mentioned, I would direct you to a spot there called "Incinerator Ridge". There are plenty of spots to pitch a tent or hang a hammock at about 7,000' elevation. There is a good trail that extends for miles in both directions that runs right through the area.

Mingus Mountain was nice. Again, good hiking down the mountain and through the valley before coming back up again. They have campsites or you can wander down the trail a bit for primitive camping. The area is used for hang gliding, too which is cool to watch. Not far down the road from Mingus is Jerome which is a cool little town that plays up the ghost town vibe. No gas there though until you get down the other side of the mountain (in Cottonwood I think).

Near Flagstaff, we really like Lockett Meadow. There are campsites of course, but there are plenty of places around where primitive camping is allowed, too. Just look for fire rings. There is a great hike through an aspen forest and into Lockett Meadow. If you're feeling spry, keep going to Humphrey's Peak which is the tallest point in Arizona. I could be mistaken, but this hike is the only hike in Arizona where you will be completely surrounded by mountains.

My favorite spots are all towards Greer, Pine, etc. We try to make a couple long weekends that way during the summer months where we can always fine 50F temps and trout fishing it seems.

Lots of great recommendations in this thread.

Just an FYI, places like Flagstaff, the Rim, the White Mountains, and Mt Lemmon are going to be a zoo Memorial Day Weekend. Not saying you can't find a nice dispersed campsite, but it gets busy. And 17 South, 260 West, and 87 South will all have a TON of traffic heading back into the Valley on Monday. We usually head home Sunday night to avoid the traffic if we're in the high country.

Also another consideration is campfire bans are common so prepare for that. We always bring our propane campfire ring since you can still use those in a fire ban.

Yeah, really wouldn't suggest Apache junction as a place to live out here. I'd go with Gilbert or chandler, both are quite nice.

And as said, Queen Creek is way far from everything, as is carefree for the most part.

I totally forgot to respond to that, but yeah Apache Junction is a "no go" if you ask me. There are much nicer places that are still affordable. If you need someplace in the direction of Apache Junction, Mesa is great and rarely seems to get mentioned. Not in the direction of Apache Junction, but rarely mentioned is Ahwatukee. Phoenix proper has some nice places to live as well and pretty much all of them have mountain views.

Yeah, if he is looking at Apache junction simply for location/travel time convenience then East Mesa would be a far better choice.

I really appreciate everyone's feedback. I listed metro areas for house rentals should I move there.

Also, for those that have experienced Louisiana summers and Phoenix summers, how would you compare?
