I would pay the extra and fly into hayden.
Last year we flew to denver, rented a car and drove in. The drive there took over 5 hours due to traffic on I70.
The way back to denver sucked due to a snowstorm. Driving rabbit ear pass in the snowpack in the dark was not fun at all.
good luck, we are flying into hayden for mardi gras.
