I went last year. Divided my time between Arenal, Monteverde and Manuel Antonio. In Arenal, I did the volcano hike and the big waterfall. Also went to one of the Hot Springs resorts (there are several). And I did a hike in the Tenorio National Park to Rio Celeste (do a Google Image search). In Monteverde, I did the cloud forrest, the hanging bridges and a zipline. Manuel Antonio was the beach stop. It is a National Park. You pay to get in but they have some amazing beaches inside the park and some great hiking trails throughout, many of which lead to beaches. Saw lots of wildlife there too - a sloth, monkeys and tropical birds. You can stay at nice resorts outside the park. They have great deep sea fishing down there too, but I didn't get a chance to go.

This is nice also
I always wanted to visit this area and some of the national parks...never been there
Going to put this area down as a road trip maybe
I recently retired and will plan a few road trips I always wanted to do...seen a lot of the world but really have not explored the back roads of America!:(

Getting some great suggestions
Thanks!

Definitely Costa Rica.

You have beaches, volcanoes, white water rapids, rainforests.

It's beautiful and the people and culture are amazing...as is the coffee. It was my favorite place I've ever been for a long time, until I went to Japan.

Sitka Alaska or Juneau would be great places. Both are in the Tongass, which is a 17 million acre temperate rainforest

Glaciers, whales, bears, wolves, true wilderness, etc.

I'd suggest Juneau as a base and go to Glacier Bay NP and tracy Arm from there, as well as a day trip to Sitka.

I did a short hike in that forest many years ago. That ground is so cool to walk on. It’s spongy and it feels like you could walk on it for days. A very cool and beautiful place.

Yeah, now Muskeg is my favorite. It's like walking on two inches of sponge, and the trees are twisted, knurled and stunted, though they are several hundred years old.

It's like a bonzai forest. The soil is really acidic though so the trees are really bizarre.

The Olympic Peninsula would have it all with hiking, the rain forest etc. Stayed at Crescent Lake Lodge and had a blast.

But...

How about Slovenia. An amazing amount of hiking, rafting, dining options.

If you're a history buff, visit Kobarid and tour the battle lines of the Isonzo Front.

But I recall a Hugh lodge at the lake?
