San Diego and Baja Peninsula

The wife and I were discussing potential future vacations. One of the ideas she put forth was the Mexican Pacific coast.
I've never been to San Diego, and I've always wanted to, so I suggested that we try and combine that into one trip.
So I wanted to pose a question to anyone who has maybe done something similar...
Is this a feasible idea? I'd imagine we'd have to rent a car and drive over the border. Is it more trouble/risk than it's worth?
And if it's a good idea, any places in northern Baja that you'd recommend?
TIA

Not sure that's a great idea. Lots of cartel activity in that area.

We drove our own car from San Diego to Ensenada, very nice drive, some little villages and deserted beaches along the way.
Stayed at a low key but nice hotel for 2 nights, hung out on the beach, relaxed, ate great seafood, drove back to San Diego.
Ensenada is only about 2.5 hours, not counting traffic at the border crossing.
Rosarita is a smaller town about half that distance, with a handful of resorts, surfing, fishing, great food.
Cabo is like 20 hours, way too far to drive.
It was 10+ years ago when we went, it was safe. I can't speak to safety today. As long as you drive during daylight hours I suspect you will be fine, really the only sketch part is driving through TJ, once you hit the beach it is smooth sailing. I did spend a night recently in TJ partying Hangover style with a group and we all managed to make it back safely.
I can't really recommend specific places because it was so long ago and at the time I was young. A couple bottles of Pacifico and some fresh fish tacos on an empty beach was a great time.

Yeah, that was my concern, but I wasn't sure how valid it was. Good to know...we'll probably opt for Costa Rica instead and do a U.S. Pacific Coast roadtrip sometime later down the road.

San Diego is fine and you really don't have to venture into Mexico.
If you do Mexico, I would look into Cabo and just stay there.

I just got back from TJ a couple of weeks ago. We stayed at the Marriott Tijuana. We took the hotel shuttle around town or just took an Uber. The food was fantastic and the staff was amazing. We stayed to the better parts of town and never felt unsafe. Tourism is BIG business for the town so they take security seriously. Just be aware of your surroundings just like you should in any city in the world. There is some REALLY good rum and tequila for a really good price down there. San Diego is beautiful and we will be back just to spend more time there.
