Salkantay Trek to Machu Pichu

Looking for advice from those who've done this Trek before. I've read up on experiencing virtually all 4 climates but my question is, can I get away with 1 pair of hiking shoes or do I need a pair of hiking boots as well?

I'm trying to figure out how much time is actually spent in a colder climate, as it appears it's just the first 1-2 days in the higher altitude?

Any other advice is appreciated!
