Any way you can stretch the trip a couple days? The Grand Canyon is something you will never forget.

ruidoso looks great

Cool vibe and nice little beer scene for a town that size. I was surprised. Everybody in NM is nice.

And the bar we drank at in Roswell the owner was from Lafayette. After a couple of hours and several rounds we kept trying to leave, he would beg us to stay and set us up again. Fun time.

Catch Cloudcroft and then up to Ruidoso between White sands and Carlsbad.

Yeah, Cloudcroft is a cool little mountain town. I'd agree with most in the thread that Carlsbad is awesome and White Sands is just a place to stop for two hours or so max.

My wife and I talked about this. Admittedly, we love NM and go there often. This summer, due to bike races, we also spent quite a bit of time in Utah, Colorado (we actually lived in Colorado a long time ago), and California. The difference in our encounters with people on trails, shops, etc.. in those places vs. in New Mexico was marked enough that we walked about it fairly frequently. People in New Mexico don't have the pretentiousness of those other places, especially folks in the outdoor scene. In Utah, especially, I've never encountered so many people while hiking that wouldn't even reply when you greeted them on the trails.

Ruidoso is bigger but Cloudcroft has a little country club that is pretty sweet.
