Family travelled abroad recently. My sis got the rental auto damage coverage through a credit provider.
Car received slight damage (~$560) while parked by the market. Upon return of the vehicle, the damage was noted and she had to pay there, with instructions and docs provided to make the claim for reimbursement.
The amount is luckily not enough to be a crisis but enough that she wouldn’t mind getting back if possible.

Anyone have experience making such a claim?
Any idea if this could affect her domestic auto insurance rates or anything?
Any other thoughts or advice?
TIA

Not if she doesnt file a claim and there is no traffic ticket or anything.

Assuming the rental was in the card holders name, usually you have a time period to notify the benefit administrator.

Have her access the website for her card and go to the member benefits section. For exmaple, with Chase the info looks like this:

quote:

Benefit Overview

Decline the rental company’s collision insurance and charge the entire rental cost to your card. Coverage is primary and provides reimbursement up to $75,000 for theft and collision damage for rental cars in the U.S. and abroad.

The following information is a summary only. Please see your Guide to Benefits for complete details.

Additional Benefit Information

It is primary coverage which means you do not have to file a claim with any other source of insurance before you can receive coverage under this benefit
Initiate and pay for the entire rental transaction using the covered Chase card and decline the rental company’s collision damage waiver or loss damage waiver
If you have questions about a specific vehicle or rental check with the Benefit Administrator prior to your travel.

It was fairly easy for me. I hit a curb in the Czech Republic and got some curb rash on the wheel of the SUV. I followed the Chase process and submitted all documentation they requested. There was a bit of back and forth but within a week or 2, I had a credit in my account for the requested amount.

The key is to have documentation for everything. Pictures, report from rental car company, repair bills, and anything else to substantiate the claim.

Sapphire Reserve paid off a couple grand when I couldn't squeeze the minivan through a parking garage turn. I believe Capital One Venture X has the same level of coverage. I don't think any other cards have primary rental coverage, but you may be able to get something.
