It appears that unless you purchase an excursion to leave the resort you are resort bound. If that's what you signed up for then enjoy and congratulations.

We went to Sancturary Cap Cana for our honeymoon years ago. We stayed at the resort except for one excursion we did where we did the dune buggy rides and they took us to the blue hole waterhole. Pretty fun. Enjoy!

It was outstanding. We were blown away.
They had a private suburban waiting for us at the airport, gave us drinks in the car. It's about a 15 minute ride to the resort. When you pull up to the resort, you're greeted with champagne, they take your bags to your room, and a butler takes you on a tour of the resort, ending at your room. The people are incredibly friendly.
Food was good. It's not south Louisiana cooking, but I'd put it above "cruise food". There are like 7 restaraunts around the resort and there wasn't one place we said we wouldn't go back to.
Beach is beautiful. You can wade out in the water for like 100 yards. There are waiters everywhere who will basically bring you whatever you want when you're in a chair by the pool or beach.
I could go on forever...make the trip. You wont be dissapointed.
